Board Games, Anyone?

1alcottacre
des. 31, 2021, 10:29 pm

There are several people in the group who not only love books, but board games as well (myself included), so I thought we might have a spot dedicated to posting about the games we are playing.

The best authority on the Internet for all things board game related is Board Game Geek (https://boardgamegeek.com/). If you are interested in gaming but have not been to the BGG website, I highly recommend it!

We just played a fun game of Rosetta!

Based on the five translations shown, can you guess the meaning of the card second from the left?

Do they make board games for one?

I usually end up playing Yahtzee for lack of being able to play anything else. Granted the cats really enjoy helping with the dice.

I'm interested.

I did get as far as pulling out board games when we had people over for Christmas dinner but we were enjoying talking so when I tentatively suggested it, there were no takers.

We went over to one of the same friend's house for New Year yesterday and she actually had a game sitting on the table (and I took some of ours over) but we didn't play. Still, it's progress (even if we brought back our games still sealed).

Oooh, board games! Yes, please.

I’ve started collecting board games (along with 1000 piece jigsaws) during the last few years, but rarely have anyone to play with. Hopefully this’ll change when the world becomes less horrible.
I agree with Lori >4 thornton37814: that I’d appreciate a board game for one.

I agree, board games for one would be appreciated.
My son and I played cribbage last night and I keep on confusing 2 for his knobs with 1 for his heels. That drives my son crazy. hehehe

Some games I have played:Ascension: Deck Building Game, Ingenious, Ginkopolis, Castles of Burgundy, Ricochet Robots, Ubongo, Uluru, Merchant of Venus, Set, Walnut Grove, Nmbr 9, and Wingspan. Wingspan is beautiful, but pricy. I got 2 expansions for Christmas this year.

Own, but have not played yet:
Isle of Cats

Also (heavier games), anything by Game Designer Uwe Rosenberg, I think, I did not list all the ones that I have played.:
A Feast for Odin, Glass Road, Agricola, Fields of Arle, At the Gates of Loyang

I'll stop now, I found a lot more than I expected :-).

ETC: some hrefs got change to heref, not helpful. Think I got them all. Thanks to PawsForThought for the heads up.

To clarify the rules of that game, it's a one-word answer!

Here's the answer: disease

14MickyFine
gen. 1, 2022, 11:25 am

Some of my current fave board games have single player variations including Isle of Cats and Everdell.

Mr. Fine and I played Sea of Clouds last night for the first time and while poor shuffling (my fault) meant we didn't really get to try the boarding and looting game mechanic much, it was pretty fun. The art is pretty gorgeous as one would expect from a game where you're sky pirates.

>21 PawsforThought: One of the best games that came out recently is Under Falling Skies. It is exclusively a solo game. Due to COVID, a lot of games that might not otherwise have a solo mode do: the aforementioned Wingspan has a great solo mode; most Uwe Rosenberg games have a solo mode, but his games tend to be on the heavier side; one of my favorite games from this past year that has a solo mode is Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition.

>24 MDGentleReader: From the sounds of it, heavier games do not put you off, so I would suggest any of these that can also be played multiplayer:

Lost Ruins of Arnak - a terrific exploration game
Obsession - this is like a Jane Austen novel in board game form
Calico - which looks deceptively easy, but really makes you think!
Ark Nova - not sure if this one is out in the States yet
Terraforming Mars - I love this game
Gaia Project - another one that I love, but it is probably the heaviest game on this list

For solo exclusively, I would recommend Under Falling Skies.

If anyone is interested in online board gaming, there are several sites that you can use. The one that I prefer is www.boardgamearena.com. It is free to use, although there are some premium games. If anyone is interested in playing something there, let me know!

32alcottacre

Game #1 for 2022 is in the books here at the Doster household. Kerry and I played Happy City, a game new to us. You have to make the inhabitants of your city happy by the end of the game and you win based on the number of your citizens x the number of hearts your city generates. Kerry kind of forgot that part and I easily won, 42-6. Yeah, that was bad. I daresay he will not make that mistake again!

Ooh, board games, yes! I hope to get to play more this year, as I'll have more free time and a fiance who also enjoys the occasional board game.

First game for 2022 was a party game called What's Yours Like?, a 20-questions sort of game. It was a fun game to play with a group of people I don't know well (some of my fiance's extended family), but I didn't like it enough to want to own my own copy or anything.

I love board and dice games! It's something my family does anytime we get together - which isn't nearly as often as I'd like!
Our current favorites are That's Pretty Clever and Qwixx. The Clever game can be single-player.

I have been trying to come up with other solo only games:

The opera singer Shadi Torbey has an entire line of games beginning with Onirim that are either one or 2 player, but really designed as solo games; the other titles include Sylvion, Castellion, Nautilion, and Aerion

There are also the Arkham Noir games - I think there are 3 "cases" out now.

As I come up with other solo only games, I will post them here, but the vast majority of the games that I play solo have multiplayer modes to them. There is at least one space-themed game that is solo only, but my mind is drawing a blank as to its name. *ugh*

I don't know if this is considered a board game but I really miss playing American Mahjong. I was in a group at one of our local libraries and was learning to play before everything was shut down. I haven't played since and I really miss it. It was a nice night out every Wednesday after work.

I do enjoy board games and my SIL has so many interesting ones. Ones that require you to think and plan. I cannot remember the one that I play over their house one night when I was supposed to babysit and their plans changed.

I also enjoy doing puzzles. My father was an avid jigsaw puzzle aficionado. So much so that he had a piece of old paneling under his bed that he used to put puzzles together and then he would some how cover the back with contact paper and get them framed.

Other games I enjoy are video games, games on my phone, bingo games.

On thing that I keep to forget mentioning: a lot of board games are now being ported to video platforms. Wingspan, for instance, is available on Steam - and it is a wonderful implementation! Raiders of the North Sea has been ported to the Nintendo Switch. I have not played that one yet, so I cannot comment on it, but here are some more that I know are available on Steam:

The aforementioned Wingspan
Terraforming Mars - this is a heavier game, so I would not recommend this one to casual gamers
Sagrada
Paperback
Charterstone
Splendor
Cottage Garden
Dream Home
Castles of Burgundy - this is a heavier game, so I would not recommend this one to casual gamers
Lords of Waterdeep
Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small
Takenoko
Pandemic

I know that there are more, but these are the ones that I have personal experience with.

Game of the Day: Today I played Roll Player for the first time in a while. In Roll Player, the player is trying to create their own character in a roll playing game (think Dungeons & Dragons) through dice manipulation. Today I created a Frogkin Sorceress who had a Street Urchin backstory with a Protector alignment. She had Knowledge and was Proud, Famous, Cunning, and Loyal. My final score was 35, making me a Clan Leader.

This is a great game both solo and multiplayer. When playing with others, it is wonderful to be able to create stories for your character when you are done with the game itself.

I am less than 1500 steps away from next level. Already planted 6000 flowers and plucked 10 Pikmin to level up. A peaceful game, you go around planting flowers.

Of those games above, I have played Terraforming Mars, Sagrada, Charterstone, Splendor, Castles of Burgundy, Lords of Waterdeep and Pandemic.

Game of the Day: Project L - This is a spatial game that supports 1-4 players as they attempt to complete puzzles. i have not played this game solo yet, but I have seen it played solo and it looks fun. I have played it with 2 players and my husband very much enjoys it. He is a casual gamer at best, but there is still an appeal of the game to more hard core gamers like myself.

What games are you getting to the table this weekend?

>198 kaida46: Deb, can you tell me a little more about your gaming tastes? It is hard to recommend games when you know little of what the person likes. For example, if you like heavy strategy games, I would not recommend something like Splendor for you. My personal preference is for medium-heavy euro games and I can recommend those left, right, and center, but I also play games with my family, including my 80+ year old mother, so I can recommend a variety of family and party games as well.

>199 alcottacre: I like role play but would like it to include more than just basically fighting monsters or bad guys, my sons do those online with guilds and groups. Animal themes are good, like Isle of Cats, and I have been considering Wingspan. Some strategy, settling on earth and in space, etc. but so you can pick it up after a few plays and not have it take forever to learn it. We were given Mysterium for Christmas, but the fam is not that interested, it seems like a more complicated version of Clue but I am willing to give it a try. Family games are good with the older grands and others when we have reunions and such. Ticket to Ride, Axis and Allies, Catan, Pirates, Sushi Go...
I have been checking out those links above and never realized there were sites for playing board games and such so already I have learned new things thanks to you.

>201 MickyFine: Yes, they were Kickstarted last year - I am anxiously awaiting my copy. In case you had not heard, Micky, Everdell is being released on Steam and eventually on the Switch in digital form July 28th.

>202 kaida46: Wingspan is awesome and it is available on Steam in digital form if you want to try it. Mysterium is good with the right group. My husband and daughter Beth did not care for it, but my daughter Catey loves it. There is a more streamlined version of the original available called Mysterium Park. I think it is more accessible than the original, so you might give it a try, Deb. Ticket to Ride is another one that is available in digital form. I mention it because I know there are times when other players are wanting.

I haven't had much time to play board games lately, but that should change this upcoming week. I am vacation with my 11 and 13 year nieces and we'll be joining some folks that I have been board gaming with for decades. The girls packed (their parents came up for a memorial service last weekend and brought some things so the girls wouldn't have to bring them on the plane):

Kingsburg - they learned this last year and asked that it be purchased in evening call home
Just One - good filler and good for adding in other folks.
Uptown
St. Petersburg - this surprised me, they didn't like it last year

I was gifted since this vacation last year:
Under Falling Skies
New York Zoo
Wingspan Oceania Expansion
Wingspan European Expansion

Probably won't bring Wingspan or expansions. We often have 4 or 5 players and I think it plays better with fewer players, less downtime.

I just finally gave some thought as to what to bring. List so far is below.

La Boca
New York Zoo
Princes of Florence
Uluru
Under Falling Skies

At the Memorial service, there were packs of cards and rules to Tonk, a game we played with the deceased in more recent times. Not enough of a game to be listed on Board Game Geek. People seemed to enjoy playing. We even got the widow (after 70 years of marriage) to play. The card game we played a lot of in earlier times was Pich (only we call it Setback). We played it later that evening when other folks left.

Anyone play Augmented Reality games? I haven't had much time, but keep up my portals and fields in Ingress and use Pikmin Bloom as a spur to walk just a little bit further. Do very little with Pokemon Go anymore.

You've been playing lots of new-to-me games, alcottacre! I need to look into them.

I should be getting back to 2nd and 4th Saturday gaming next month.

Not quite board games but has anyone played the 'How to Host a Murder' dinner games (ETA: and knows of one for more players)? They're usually for 6-8 players but I'm planning to invite 11 - 18 people (it depends on whether the kids condescend to join us). I know you can add in your own characters, but then they don't get clues and it's no fun for those people.

Because Kerry is out of town for the weekend, I am getting in some more solo gaming. Friday, I played my weekly game of Empires of the North. Saturday, I played Rune Stones, which is not a solo game, but there is a solo variant on BGG that works well. Unfortunately, I lost that one. Today, I played Pandemic: Iberia which, other than the In the Lab expansion for the base game and the Legacy versions of the game, is my favorite iteration of Pandemic. Gaming over the past few days:

Underwater Cities solo, for which I need 125 points for the win (which I have yet to do!) - Scored 94 points, the best I have ever done with the expansion
Anno 1800 solo, my first play of this one - I scored 147 points, which was dead in the middle of the scoring grid
Empires of the North solo - Need 45 points for the scenario win and only scored 43
Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition solo - Still have not won, but did the best I ever have, scoring 51 points, having the Oxygen at 13%, Temperature at +4, and all but one ocean
Anno 1800 with Kerry - we were playing this one solo together and 2/3 of the way through he announced that he did not like it and "I was right, there is a lot to think about!"
Red Cathedral with Kerry - we tied at 31 prestige points and he won on the tie breaker
Merlin with Kerry - A very lopsided game as I got very lucky with the mission cards early on and he never challenged me in the environs
Savannah Park with Kerry - Another lopsided game, which was entirely my fault, since I forgot to tell him about how to score the herds - this was our first play of this one
Glass Road solo - I still have yet to get to the magical 30 point threshold in this one. I scored 24 today.

The chief conceit in this game is that you have two tracks for points, one for citizen points and one for building points. Another solo play in this morning, this time of Anno 1800 - my second solo play ever - and this play was much different than the first. This game turned out much different than I thought it would at the outset. I initially thought that, since Isobel Sarmento was one of the Objective cards, I would try to maximize the New Islands that I could discover, but I only managed to get 1. I had 2 Old World Island tiles, which I needed as I had 4 Trade Ships and 2 Expedition Ships, although I never got a ship higher than Level 1. The pace of the game was fast - I ended up with no Investors and with 20 cards left in the timer deck - and I really pushed it about halfway through. I scored 174 points (although I originally forgot to add the points from my Population cards in, so I had to go back and re-score), making my village a Magnificent Metropolis.

My daughter, Beth, chose this one for my "30x30" Solo Challenge and she also chose everything else, except for the Villain who ended up changing from the Always Lead (Order of Aurelius) to Angel due to the scheme in play. The three heroes for this game were Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, and Xander Harris. The Big Bad was The Master, the Scheme was Road to Damnation, and the only Henchmen were the Hellhounds. I ended up with 6 Courage tokens at the end of the game, which must be some kind of record for me! It was a close game as I had 4 of the 5 needed for a lose in the Escaped Villains stack, but I got the win. I forgot to take score at the end though - this was only the second time I have played this one solo.

I was up in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, so I got my weekly play of Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North in, using the Panuk clan and playing the Pirate's Den scenario with a target score of 45 points. I did not end up with the same event in any 2 rounds this game, which is highly unusual for me. I had 7 islands by the end of the game and half of them were good for resource and gold generation, making it much easier to get the resources I needed. I had 9 population by the end of the game too, the most I have ever had at game end, I think. I had 17 points going into final scoring, got 14 point from my islands (scenario specific), 13 points from my cards, 2 points for leftover resources, and 1 for gold, bringing my total score to 47 points and a win.

Saturday, Kerry and I played Ancient Terrible Things, a perennial favorite which we normally play at this time of the year, and Planet Unknown, a game that is new to us that we very much enjoyed.

We just played Obscurio for the first time last night and had a blast. I was the Grimoire and the group correctly deducted the traitor first try and just managed to escape before running out of cohesion points.

>250 MickyFine: I love those kinds of games! Mysterium was a big hit with my daughter Catey and me, but the other half of my immediate family, Kerry and Beth, did not care for it overmuch. The game now lives with Catey and we try (along with my mother) to get games of either Mysterium or Mysterium Park in when I go to Longview to visit.

As we wrap up October and playing our "scary" games, Kerry and I got Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu to the table today. We got a win, but it was a near thing!

I haven't posted for a while...

Azul: Queen's Garden followed by Just One, my current favorite party type game. Difficult for my friend with Parkinson's, though. Writing is hard when your hands shake.

20th anniversary celebration of gaming group I belong to ( I started attending in early 2004):
A couple games of Tichu, my favorite partner trick taking game. Very high level of play, yet lots of banter and story telling (the topic of driver's ed came up). I laughed SO much.

Die Sieben Siegel. Rethemed as Sluff Off, apparently very similar to Oh, Hell. Probably my favorite non partner trick taking game.

I was taught The Crew: Quest Planet For Nine and The Crew:Mission Deep Sea. We started playing really late and we were still learning basic strategy. Much hilarity as we made pretty basic mistakes. There was a lot of - that play seemed like a good idea at the time, but wait - I guess it was actually a really bad idea.

Lots of yummy snacks and a delicious meeple shaped cake!

Another Game Day:

Princes of Florence. A favorite. I won, pretty sure for the first time. Only by one point over the usual winner.

Airlines Europe. Mashup of Union Pacific and Airlines, by Alan R. Moon. I like it better than Union Pacific, I don't think I've ever played Airlines.

On alcottacre's recommendation, I bought Trekking Through History. Haven't even opened the box it was shipped in yet, though. I will before next Saturday's gaming.

I was due to play 2 player Ark Nova, the day before Halloween, but I'd gotten my bivalent booster the previous Friday evening and was really wiped out. It's getting lots of play in our gaming group right now. I've read the rules and watched a couple videos. I like the theme of building a zoo and working on conservation projects.

>248 alcottacre:, someone showed me one of the Roll and Write Games at the gaming group's anniversary party. A other friemd said he used plastic wrap to cover paper for Roll and Write game so they could use writexerase marker on it and save space when travelling. I am sure that I will play one some day.

>253 MDGentleReader: I am dying to learn Ark Nova. I own it, but have not gotten it to the table yet.

>255 MDGentleReader: I am not the biggest fan of roll and write games, but there are a few I like. I have laminated some of the pads in a couple of my games so that I can use the dry erase markers in them.

New favourite in this house is Cascadia. We've played it twice in the past week and had a great time.

I've played Qwixx, it's been a long time.

Played Golem today. Bit of a brain burner and I lost badly, but want to try again.

>259 MickyFine: I have looked at Cascadia a couple of times, but it just has not grabbed me. I already own Flatout Games Calico, which I really like, and have a copy of Verdant on the way to me at some point.

>260 MDGentleReader: Another roll and write I really enjoy and cannot figure out why I did not mention before is Cartographers. I would play it ahead of Three Sisters any time.

Yeah, Golem is one I would like to try at some point. I have heard good things about it.

I played Nusfjord today for the first time. The designer of the game, Uwe Rosenberg, is one of my all-time favorite designers.

Though I've bought a few board games we still haven't managed to break out any of them. My husband's cousin stayed with us in October and brought a game for us ... it was ... oh, yes; Articulate. She said her family played it and it was hilarious. We intended to play while she was here but to date the box is still sealed :0(

I'm about to fly off to Sydney to spend time with family and taking my youngest with me. He's turning 14 and it'll be a chance for him to spend quality time with his grandparents and cousins that he rarely sees - especially in the last three years. So, any recommendations for a good board game? I'll probably bring it back with us as my parents have recently downsized and anyway don't like clutter. I'm fairly sure there's a Toys 'R Us near them but I don't know about anywhere else where I might buy games, so preferably looking for easy to find games (other than the old standards like Monopoly).

ETA: I know there are lots of good games on this thread, but I'm feeling to lazy to go through all of them and work it out. So just looking for a shortlist.

>265 humouress: Is he a word lover, Nina? I would suggest Just One if he is - it is a family party game and can be hilarious at times. It is a cooperative game with one person guessing the answer and everyone else giving the clues; however, if two or more people give the same clue, they cancel each other out.

If he likes real world situational games, I might suggest Pandemic, where everyone is fighting together to keep the world safe from four pandemics that are threatening to take over the world. This game is rightfully considered a classic.

If he is into skate boarding, you might consider Skate Summer, but this one is heavier than the other two that I mentioned and I am not sure of its availability in Australia.

Is he a Harry Potter fan? If so, the cooperative game Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle might be a winner for him as the players follow Harry and his friends throughout their 7 years at Hogwarts.

I meant to post on this thread a few weeks ago, but forgot:

I got to hang out with my cousins the weekend after Thanksgiving, and we played Mysterium (my first time playing). It was lots of fun!

>267 foggidawn: There is now a trimmed down version of Mysterium available, foggi, if you are interested: Mysterium Park. It keeps the basics of the bigger game, but streamlines it somewhat.

>267 foggidawn: The same company also has a game called Obscurio. Somewhat similar game play with a library/cursed books angle. We're pretty fond of it in our house although it's decidedly more fun with 4+ players.

Beth and I spent several hours yesterday playing games on Board Game Arena. We played two games of Ticket to Ride, and one game each of Concept, Wingspan, and Patchwork. Great fun and a good way to wrap up 2022's game playing.

If anyone plays on BGA, I am scdoster there. Send me a friend request!

I’ve gotten to play some Bananagrams over the last few days, so that’s been fun. I started up a jigsaw puzzle today and will work on it some more tomorrow.
