Okay, silly question here: what is it about Pynchon's use of the word "a-and"?

I've not found any other references for that spelling of the word "and" except Pynchon's use.

That is all.

Pynchon is one I can't believe I've never read... there's several on my wish list, one on the bookshelf, but never one open in my hand... maybe he goes to the top of the summer reading list: any suggestions?

bardsfingertips, I don't have an answer for you, but there is some speculation about it here.

MrsHeisenberg, thank you for the link. It did not help too much with my own question, but it certainly helped with one of the the many questions that I do have; especially Tchitcherine's name.

TeacherDad, I would suggest The Crying Lot of 49 simply because it is short and very Pynchon-esque. V is also a good starting point, but very complex.

Actually, this is my favorite blurb about reading any of his books: http://www.hyperarts.com/pynchon/newbies.html

I haven't yet read either of the Pynchon books on my shelves (my intentions are good, but 2008 is the first year in ages I've read more than I've bought). I'll make a point of reading The Crying of Lot 49 this year.

I actually think it's the Lot 49 one down on the shelves... and since I just turned in my final final assignment (until Sept) I have some extra time to devote to Mr Pynchon...

Something I posted on Pynchon Pandæmonium:

Lo-and-behold: Vineland was a-mentioned on NPR's Summer Book series: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story...

Enjoy!

May be old news by now, but I read in the __Times that Pynchon has a new book coming out in August, Inherent Vice, described as noirish and set in that horrible city 90 minutes north of you fine SD folks.

Hahaha... Yes, the news is a tad old for me, but I appreciate anyone finding out about it and spreading the word.
