Since learning about the 16 types, and particularly the INTJ type, I have become fascinated by the fact that those (very few) of us who have introverted intuition as our primary function can see, predict or understand the future somehow.

It seems illogical to me, but yet I feel I almost do have this ability.

Do any of you have experiences of this?

I guess I never thought of it as predicting the future, since things just seem so obvious to me, I wonder why others didn't already know it was going to happen.

I do not think of it as predicting the future. I always thought of it as being able to find patterns in large volumes of data and extrapolating from there. Facts and events hint at certain directions that other events can go in. Conclusions just jump out of the rest of the data.

Life on a dead thread! I agree with you, drwho. It's seeing the patterns when you have enough data.

How many of us INTJs are on LT? It would be interesting to see if the distribution of the 16 patterns mirrors that of the general population or is skewed in some way.

It does feel like predicting the future sometimes. But it seems a lot more modest than I guess those words sound. I notice it most when I'm driving, because I find myself reacting to events before they happen; the tail lights several cars in front of you can tell you what's about to happen, if you pay enough attention to them. When I'm a passenger, I'm constantly stomping my imaginary brake pedal and digging my nails into the center console; I can't believe how long it takes other people to recognize danger on the road.

polutropon - I used to be like that as a passenger - but my wife told me to stop it!

But as a driver I always know when a car is going to change lanes, and which cars ahead are likely to be trouble (as in being nervously or heedlessly driven).

I also find in sport that I can read the game ahead of most people and be one step ahead. Then again at my age and in my present state of (un)fitness, I need all the extra help I can get in that respect.

"Introverted Intuition (Ni) is the attitude that whatever is manifest (apparent, observable, described) is only the tiniest fraction of the total reality and all of its potential, and it is manifest only because it serves a purpose--a purpose that it achieves by exploiting a certain way of interpreting or navigating by signs. Ni is attunement to what lurks in the shadow of that manifestation. What is that assumed way of interpreting or navigating? What could we see if we were free of it?"

This is taken from

which is based on the work of Lenore Thomson.

I find the site has some interesting things to say about introverted intuition. The above passage is interesting as it suggests how IN_Js in particular step outside the assumptions and socially accepted constructs around meaning.

We are neutral about these constructs, we are more interested in what they say about how the group or society in question operated, what its norms and expectations are.

I wonder if this stepping outside of the rules and belief systems in order to understand the whole construct is what helps us see things ahead of when they occur?

A coworker (ISFJ I would guess) lives down the road from me so we drive the same path to work. I made a a comment about how easy the drive a fact they disputed. I said I hardly waited in traffic, another fact they disputed.
When we carpooled one day I shared the secrets to my success, stay in the right lane north of 146, get in the left lane to go through the round about, then switch. If the traffic is backed up past the condos get the left lane if not get in the right. I didn't explain this I played a game saying things like "I'll be in front of that red car before 130th street" and "I'll sit through the light once passing 8 cars in the process." It comes off as intuition but is nothing more than noticing and exploiting a pattern (and playing games with a coworkers mind).
Other personalities may notice a pattern but the INTJ in a bid to see their ideas heard will voice information about it or appear to be ahead of patterns. This can get them in trouble by making it look like they cause issues and solve them to look like the hero.
