Can anyone recommend any fiction which would show what everyday life was like in Iraq before the war?

It's actually an interesting question, but there does not seem to have been too much Iraqi fiction translated into English (I'm assuming that, like myself, you don't read Arabic). Since I didn't recall anything meeting your request offhand I tried a Library of Congress search and got the following:

Iraqi short stories : an anthology edited by Yassen Taha Hafidh and Lutfiyah Al-Dilaimi
Tales from old Baghdad : grandma and I by Khalid Kishtainy
Diary of a wave outside the sea by Dunya Mikhail
The Pilgrim's rules of etiquette by Taghi Modarressi
When the grey Beetles took over Baghdad by Mona Yahia

If any of these are useful, or if you find anything else, let us know.

Interesting - thanks. I've googled them and will definitely try and get hold of them.

NB Taghi Modarressi was Iranian (and Anne Tyler's husband) - but the book is about the Iran-Iraq war.
