I've been watching this group for a while, and now I can 'officially' join it. (I'm very excited about this, btw.) I just accepted my first position since graduating from the School of Information (at the University of Michigan) this past April. I was hoping for a technical services/cataloging job, and was lucky enough to snag one. Hooray!

I'll be working cataloging historic serials. If anyone would like to send tips, suggestions, or reading lists my way, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, and Happy Reading!

I am at a local historical society library. Is there a way to put serials (such as newsletters, journals, etc.) into LibraryThing?

You have to first decide whether you want to catalogue single issues or whole serials. Either is possible. You can use series to connect single issues. What is important is watching work details, as often different issues will autocombine and have to be separated.

But see also http://www.librarything.com/work/10533143/editions, not listed in that series, with several single issues included.

It isn't that hard to separate an edition out and recombine it properly, but it takes time and effort.
