Jefferson active again?

I've noticed TJ popping up on my connection news again, with books and reviews being added. Are these coming from a new source, or is someone simply editing the books that were already in there for more accuracy?

Is anyone else seeing Stormy Leather in ThomasJefferson's gallery? I would have thought that a libertarian such as Jefferson would be opposed to bondage! *Zing!*

On another note, see this thread for some explanation of the recent activity; you'll be seeing more of that as the Monticello staff and I figure out how best to add the other portions of Jefferson's library into LT.

Yup - they're in his library thanks to the good work of the folks at Monticello!

I am not sure who to address this to but I think I have found another book for Thomas Jefferson’s library, Natural and statistical view; or picture of Cincinnati and the Miami country, illustrated by maps, with an appendix, containing observations on the late earthquakes, the aurora borealis, and the south-west wind by Daniel Drake.

In Daniel Drake, 1785-1852; pioneer physician of the Midwest, Emmet Field Horine explains in detail how Drake got a copy of his book to Jefferson. As soon as Drake got copies from the publisher he sent two to Josiah Miegs, who Drake had met while Miegs was working as Surveyor General in Cincinnati. At the time Miegs was working in Washington DC as Commissioner of the United States General Land Office. According to Horine Miegs sent the book to Jefferson on 1 March 1816 along with a note that read…

“My friend Doctor Daniel Drake of Cincinnati, Ohio, has requested me to transmit to you a Copy of his work, entitled "Picture of Cincinnati" I presume it will gratify you as an Elegant and valuable work.
The author is a native of New Jersey, from which state his Father, after having served in the Revolutionary War, emigrated to Kentucky - he has acquired a valuable fund of Literature & Science - propio Marto with steady industry - without the aid of Schools or Colleges- he is a sincere and faithful friend of our free Institutions. It is pleasant to know that the best distinguished minds are supporters of these Institutions.”

On 7 April 1816 Jefferson replied…

“I have referred {sic} asking the favor of you to return my thanks to Dr Drake for the copy of his account of the state of Ohio which he has been so kind as to send me until I could have time to peruse it. I have done this with great pleasure and may now express my gratification in the able addition to the knoledge {sic} we possess of our different state; and I may say with truth that were all of them as well delineated as that which is the subject of this volume, we should be more accurately and scientifically known to the rest of the world. With all my thanks for this mark of attention be pleased to accept the assurance of my great esteem & respect.”

Horine says that the Library of Congress photocopied the letters for him but he does not give any more information about them and I don’t know if I will get a chance to look for them anytime soon.

I just want to say thanks for The Jefferson list. I just read a book about his library and wanted a overview of his collection.
