Has anyone good some good tips on naval warfare during WW1? I have a number of books on the Battle of Jutland: The Rules Of The Game, Jutland, the German Perspective and Jutland 1916, I have read Massie's Castles Of Steel and a couple of other books on Zeebrugge and the Emden. Any recommendations would be welcome!

Probably the best single volume is A Naval History of WW1 by Paul Halpern. The bibliography will then point you in a multitude of different directions!

Hi Ted et al,
I'm interested in the literature on the German surface raiders of WWI (& WWII). That includes the early raiders (mostly converted liners), the cruisers (Emden & Konigsburg) the later "tramp" raiders (Wolf) & the colorful Seeadler of course. Please look in my collection under the RAIDER tag for a number of titles. Cheers, A

Ammianus,
Just reviewed your Raiders tag - a fine collection and given me a few more titles to seek out :-(
You might care to look at my 'German raiders' tag - not as comprehensive, but I think there are a couple of titles you are missing and might find interesting. Regards, Ian

Thanks Ian! Glad to help you flesh out your Xmas list!!
FYI, I just discovered a website that puts old movies on dvd.
I've ordered (via Paypal) a copy of UNDER TEN FLAGS (1960 movie based on adventures of the Atlantis WWII). No idea the quality.

The best that I have read about Naval operation in The Great War, especially tactics, was in The Crisis by Winston Churchill. I haven't yet read all the volumes, but what I have read so far has been most excellent.

Oh, for heavens sake dump Churchill!
Try Paul G Halpern instead.
1) A Naval History of World War 1, US Naval Institute Press, 1994,
2) The Naval War in the Mediterranean 1914-1018, USNIP, 1987.
Both are available through Abebooks. The first is quite affordable, but the second seems to be quite rare and expensive.
A Naval History... is superb, complete and very readable.
