OK I am new to nudging so I hope this works! These are books I have had on my shelves for a few years now and it is my goal for 2009 to finally read or pass on any old books on my TBR lists.
So here goes, fingers crossed!

Sorry I just have to say yay it worked! Phew.

Hi Library Nook, welcome to book nudgers. I've read 3 of the books on your list. Shadow of the Wind I really didn't like very much, I found it a bit long winded. Atlantis is ok for escapism but I'm afraid I found it a bit stupid. I will nudge A Thousand Acres, I read this a few months ago and it has stayed with me since then.

Thanks Teresa, Atlantis is one of the top ones on my list to get rid of without reading but there was a small part of me that worried I might be missing out if I did lol!

Hello,

The only one I've read is Shadow of the Wind and I really didn't like it--mainly because I thought it was about 400 pages too long. If it had been a 150 p novel, it would have been okay. Many others disagree with my dislike of the book.

I've had A Thousand Acres, Behind the Scenes at the Museum and Bernard Cornwell recommended to me, so I'd try one of those.

#4 - Trust me, you wouldn't me missing out on anything.

Three of these have lingered in my 200+ tbr's for a long time. Behind the Scenes at a Museum, The Shadow of the Wind and A Thousand Acres. As I hear the last of these is based on Shakey's King Lear I think it would be the one I'd nudge.

I wonder if Independence Day is as bad as the film? I know, I know. This book is actually a amusing US travelogue, with quite an interesting cover, written by a Brit.

A very firm nudge here for Behind The Scenes at the Museum.

Coming behind Fleurfisher to reinforce the nudge of Behind the Scenes at the Museum which was very well done (although recedes a bit as it was years ago I read it.

Shame her subsequent two novels did not live up to the mark - I know she has a new book out and I am dying to know if she has returned to some of her initial talent and shine.

I think the same can be said for A Thousand Acres which was by far the best of Smiley's books, but not getting a nudge from me.

Carrying on the support for Behind the Scenes at the Museum. Read it and loved it years ago. Didn't bother reading her next one for years ( Human Croquet) because everyone said it was disappointing and then read it this year and loved it just as much!

I'm relieved to read all these negative comments about The Shadow of the Wind! I had to give up, although I might try again one of these days. So I guess that's a de-nudge for that one.

On the positive side, I very much enjoyed Behind the Scenes at the Museum, although like kiwidoc I read it years ago and don't remember it too clearly. Anyway, it gets my nudge.

#12. re. The Shadow of the Wind. I read this on a long train journey and spent the first half of the book regretting my choice and wishing I'd brought something else. I would have probably given up if I'd had anything else to read. Then about half way through it suddenly got very readable and I couldn't put it down even after I'd finished my journey.

>13 Soupdragon: ah, now you're making me have second thoughts! One of my real friends said the same thing.

This is great! I'm getting nudges for books that aren't even on my list, on a thread that's not mine!

(edited to point out that I mean "real friends" as opposed to "LT friends", rather than "imaginary"...)

#14. Actually, I am a figment of your imagination, conjured up so you don't have to attempt to read The Shadow of the Wind ever again (:

I'll nudge A Thousand Acres which I thought was very good. Also Behind the Scenes at the Museum because I like Kate Atkinson.
ETA: I'm nudging Shadow of the Wind OFF your pile because the reviews have been underwhelming.

I'll add a nudge for The Shadow of the Wind. I found Museum very disappointing and still have A Thousand Acres on my TBR pile - maybe we can both nudge each other into getting round to that one? Looks good though, and I do love Lear.

I'll give a swift kick to Behind the Scenes at the Museum. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not like The Shadow of the Wind even though my local bookseller promised, promised, promised me I would adore it. I found it rather sexist. A Thousand Acres . . . a bit milquetoastish for my taste.

I'll nudge Kate Atkinson too. I read Behind the Scenes at the Museum a looong time ago now, but loved it then. The Guardian has just had it as its Book Club 'book of the month' so there are a couple of interesting columns to follow it up with.

I also really liked A Thousand Acres - thought it did the Lear story really well - but am aware that this is also in another nudgee's pile and has attracted some very negative comments there!

#18 - thanks for introducing me to a new word which had me rushing to the dictionary!!!

milquetoast = sissy: a timid man or boy considered childish or unassertive

lol argh decisions! Thanks so much for the comments!

I was quite surprised to discover strong negative feelings towards A Thousand Acres on another nudging pile. I enjoyed the book thoroughly. Urania, can you elaborate on your "milquetoastish" comment, if we can briefly hijack a piece of this thread?

Update- Finally getting round to read a fiction book and not one for work and have started A Thousand Acres, I am a couple of chapters in now.

In case anyone is interested here is another update- finished it and although it was a little long winded in places I did enjoy it. So thanks!
