I would like to start a thread where we can give away books to those who would like them. Here are my loose rules, feel free to discuss:
1) to get a book you have to be regular visitor to this 75ers group - not just jumping in and grabbing a book!
2) I have limited my giving to 4 books a month to be given to 4 different 75ers.
3) I may not have 4 every month, but I'll try!
4) If a book doesn't go one month, it just carries over to the next
5) I will only give "thin" paperback books away, a per our Canadian PO rates, they go much cheaper than most books.

So here are my four for December:
1) Cat Among the Pigeons by Agatha Christie
2) Memento Mori by Muriel Spark SPOKEN FOR
3) Home Truths by David Lodge SPOKEN FOR
4) Paradise News by David Lodge

Please ask if condition is important to you.

Well, my immediate impulse was to say, "I'll take that one!" *smile*

I think it's a fun idea, sort of a private Book Mooch.

We need to find our own name for this, I guess : ).

Go ahead and ask for one, Tad, the early bird gets the book!

I've never read Cat Among Pigeons. So, I'd take that one, if you don't mind.

Is there something you're looking for? If I have it, I could send it in exchange.

Do you have any Agatha Christie's? I've got quite a few but there are gaps...

wow! What a great idea.
If possible, I would like to receive Home Truths by David Lodge.
Please allow meto send a book to you from the following list. Please let me know if you are interested in any of the following:
1) The Man in the Picture by Susan Hill
2) Why The Devil Chose New England For His Work by Jason Brown
3) Society's Child and autobiography of Janis Ian
4) Rasputin's Daughter by Robert Alexander

How nice of you guys to offer me a book. I have reserved Cat and Home Truths for Tad and Whisper1.

Whisper1, Janis Ian's bio sounds interesting. Is it very thick and heavy? I don't want you to spend a lot on postage.

We can exchange addresses by posting privately on our profile page.
I probably won't be able to mail these til later in the week, hope that's okay.

dihiba,

I went to make sure that all my Christie's were listed in my library (it's easier for you to go there than to list them all). While doing so, my wife said she had some and, among them, was Cat Among the Pigeons. So, I don't need it after all.

However, I'm not reneging. :-) Take a look through my library. I think they're all in paperback except The Clocks, Towards Zero, The Seven Dials Mystery and A Pocket Full of Rye. If there's one there among the others you need, you're welcome to have it. Put your address as a private post on my profile and I'll send it to you.

--Tad

Edit...man, touchstones have been bad lately!

Sorting paperbacks, I found I have duplicates of:

Hit List by Lawrence Block (Keller #2)
Chanur's Homecoming by C. J. Cherryh (Chanur #4)
Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings (Belgariad #1) (TAKEN)
B is for Burglar by Sue Grafton (Kinsey Malone #2) (TAKEN)

If someone needs them, let me know. Otherwise, they go to the home for all stupidly-purchased-duplicates, which is the cabin. :-)

I'd be interested in the David Eddings, Pawn of Prophecy if I qualify? I'll look through some of my books for suitable offers, when I go home!! (my mum's where all my books are)

Tad, I wouldn't mind the "B" Sue Grafton book, if that's okay.

Dihiba, you're a genius. What a great idea. (Do I count as a regular 75er??)

I'd love to read Memento Mori if you haven't yet disposed of that - and Linda/Whisper, I'm also really keen to read The Man in the Picture. But... I am horribly aware that US-to-UK is horrendously expensive....

I literally just put a big batch up on BookMooch/ReadItSwapIt, most of which have been snapped up (and the ones left over I wouldn't like to offer to 75ers...). But I can list:

Linda Grant - The Clothes on Their Backs
Jonathan Raban - Waxwings (NB ex-library though)
Amy Bloom - Away (no personal endorsement here as I haven't read it!)

Actually, it occurs to me that I could also potentially list The Brief History of the Dead, since the warehouse sale I frequent with alarming regularity has a few copies so I could easily replace mine if anyone wanted it.

Living here in India, I feel so left out :(
But seriously, an amazing initiative, hats off to the idea!

The book is a very small one. Any even if it wasn't I don't mind sending it to you.

Please post your address on my homepage and I'll get it out to you early this week.

I am cleaning my basement and found boxes of books today. Please do not feel left out. As soon as I get a chance to go through them, I'll post those I can send and if you are interested, I'll be happy to send some to you.

Flossie I am in Canada, and to the UK isn't too bad. It's also a very thin book!
It will go out later in the week.

Whisper

Thanks for the offer :)
I didn't write that message because I dont trust you people, I know you wouldn't mind sending those books, the issue is that it would be costly to send books to India anywhere from US, Canada or even Europe and I wouldn't want that.

>16 Whisper1: - Linda, that's really lovely of you. I'll pop my co-ordinates on your profile page...

>18 dihiba: - dihiba, oh duh - you did say Canada, I just can't read ;) Thank you very much, that would be really great. So many of you have been reading Muriel Spark on here, and having only read Miss Jean Brodie, I'm intrigued enough to want to try more.

21dihiba

I've just "discovered" Muriel Spark as well - though of course I'd heard of her re Jean Brodie - which I read earlier this year - she's a delightful writer. I also read A Far Cry From Kensington which was a lot of fun too. One thing about Spark is that if you don't have time, or are too tired, to take on a larger tome, her books are short and a real lift.

dihiba and lunacat,

Books went out today. Don't know how long international Air Mail will take.

If it's anything like how long it takes for my checks to get up to my Canadian bank account...well, let's just say that I think they send them by mule and the mule died.

American Rust by Phillip Meyer. Here's a description of the book that I copied directly from Amazon.com :In his unrelentingly downbeat debut, Meyer offers up a character-driven near-noir set in Buell, a dying Pennsylvania steel town, where aimless friends Billy Poe and Isaac English are trapped by economic and personal circumstance. Just before their halfhearted escape to California, Isaac accidentally kills a transient who tries to rob Poe. The boys return to the crime scene the next day with plans to cover up the crime, setting the plot in motion. Poe is soon under suspicion, and Isaac, distraught after discovering Poe has been carrying on a relationship with Isaac's sister, Lee, sets off for California alone. Meanwhile, Poe's mother, Grace, mourns her own lost opportunities, broods over her son and pines for her on-again-off-again love, the local sheriff. A fully realized tragic heroine, Grace is the poignant thrust of the novel, embodying enough rural tragedy to nearly atone for the novel's weakness: a sense that some of the plot mechanics are arbitrary. Still, Meyer has a thrilling eye for failed dreams and writes uncommonly tense scenes of violence, and in the character of Grace creates a woeful heroine. Fans of Cormac McCarthy or Dennis Lehane will find in Meyer an author worth watching.

Up for grabs to anyone who wants it. Will send anywhere in the world.

By the way, great idea for a thread.

Zipporah by Halter
The Virgin's Lover by Gregory
The Queen's Fool by Gregory

Let me know where to send any of these--otherwise, next year they go into the Hollywood High School library box.

You are all very lovely people and I feel so lucky to 'know' you, in a virtual sense at least! Linda, your book arrived this morning - but my husband says if it's a book, I'm not allowed to open it and he's going to wrap it up for me for Christmas :) Double the fun... THANK YOU.

I rec'd Home Truths. Many thanks. I hope to have time to read this in the next few days!

I hope you enjoy the autobiography of Janis Ian. I found it very interesting. This book was purchased after attending one of her concerts in my home town. She actually signed it for my husband Will.

Happy Holidays!

After the holidays I plan to put some books here. I have a small stack that I would like to finish and pass around but I keep getting books from the library, or that someone in RL would like or that I want to keep.
