This is my first challenge on LT, so I'm ridiculously excited! I love seeing how everyone else is organizing their lists. My list will likely change as I figure out the easiest way for me to organize my lists. I think to mark off I'll put an asterisk (*) to show which books have been read.

Yikes, I got so excited about this challenge that I decided to try for the general 999 challenge as well. On top of my normal monthly book club! I'm definitely going to have to have some overlaps, I read fast, but not that fast! It's tempting, but I won't let myself start until 2009 already starts (got stuff lined up already!). I will have overlaps between my Paranormal and my General 999 Challenge, but I won't have a book overlap within one challenge (for example, a kid lit paranormal may be in both of my 999 Challenges, but I won't have a book be in two different categories within one challenge).

My categories:
I. Abracadabra
II. Fur & Fins
III. It's Elemental, My Dear
IV. Neck-Nibblers
V. Frequent Flyers
VI. Smoking Section
VII. Ups & Downs
VIII. I See Dead People
IX. Paranormal Casserole

I. Abracadabra (Witchcraft, Mages, etc...) *Finished 07/05/09

1. Dime Store Magic by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/08/09 Savannah is a spoiled brat.
2. Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/08/09 I'm officially hooked on the series now.
3. The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling *Finished 03/15/09 Cute and very quick read.
4. Snow Spider by Jenny Nimmo *Finished 06/23/09 I bought this trilogy since I loved her Charlie Bone books, but this one almost feels as though it were written by a child and the plot feels choppy.
5. Emlyn's Moon by Jenny Nimmo *Finished 06/23/09 The writing style still feels simplistic, but the plot is a lot better in this one. Looking forward to the concluding book!
6. Chestnut Soldier by Jenny Nimmo *Finished 06/24/09 Way too many exclamation marks in the book for the dialogue- made it sound odd. I liked the main plot part, but it ended oddly and I'm not quite sure what the point was.
7. Would-Be Witch by Kimberly Frost *Finished 06/27/09 That was a seriously adorable book. Reminds me of the Charmed and ... or the Katie Chandler books- fun paranormal activity mixed in with some chick lit.
8. Raven's Shadow by Patricia Briggs *Finished 07/05/09 Wanted to stay up last night to finish those last few pages... but then I wouldn't have been able to enjoy them fully!
9. Raven's Strike by Patricia Briggs *Finished 07/05/09 P. Briggs rocks my world, I've loved every book of hers that I've read so far. This was a wonderful duology. LOVED it. :)

II. Fur and Fins (Weres, shifters, merfolk) *Finished 03/07/09

1. The Tail of Emily Windsnap by Liz Kessler *Finished 01/08/09 Meh.
2. Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep by Liz Kessler *Finished 01/09/09 These are really, really bad books.
3. Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist by Liz Kessler *Finished 01/10/09 Okay.
4. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs *Finished 01/11/09 Excellent.
5. Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs *Finished 01/12/09 I am in love.
6. Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs *Finished 01/14/09 Why aren't there more in this series already?
7. Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs *Finished 02/10/09 I think I would marry these books if I could.
8. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/04/09 Took a while to get into, but now I'm hooked!
9. Stolen by Kelley Armstrong *Finished03/07/09 Now I'm starting to get into the series...

III. It's Elemental, My Dear (Element Magic/Control) *Finished 07/04/09

1. Windfall by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/19/09 Whew, this one finally slowed down a little bit- the plot was still moving quickly, but the writing style was easier to read. What a difference chapter breaks make!
2. Firestorm by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/21/09 Whoa, didn't see that curveball at the end. I can't tell where she's going with the series, which is keeping it quite interesting.
3. Thin Air by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/22/09 Dude, she's all about the roller coaster writing! I liked the amnesia twist.
4. Gale Force by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/23/09 I wonder if she's trying to tell us something about all species and forms of life needing to respect one another and work together.
5. Reserved for the Cat by Mercedes Lackey *Finished 06/25/09 Oops, put this series on the bookshelf in reverse order and read the most recent one first. That's okay, because I loved it, though it looks like the "world" stays the same and the characters change each book. I'll miss those characters I came to love in this book!
6. Serpent's Shadow by Mercedes Lackey *Finished 06/27/09 You know, I wasn't prepared to like this one as much as the last... but I did! Yay!
7. Phoenix & Ashes by Mercedes Lackey *Finished 06/29/09 I liked the story, but would have preferred if it was less of an obvious Cinderella story. Then I checked the books online- apparently this series is all about re-imagining fairy tales. Can't wait to see her take on the next couple now!
8. The Wizard of London by Mercedes Lackey *Finished 07/01/09 This book was set in a different time than the others in the series- I got to see why Lord Alls-butt (as I call him) is the way he is. Bummer, only one left in the series.
9. Gates of Sleep by Mercedes Lackey *Finished 07/04/09 This was another really cute story by Lackey. Of course, you knew that the two would end up together, so the rush at the end was understandable.

IV. Neck-Nibblers (vamps) *Finished 05/16/09

1. The Bride of Casa Dracula by Marta Acosta *Finished 01/27/09 I like where she's going with the series...
2. The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason *Finished 05/04/09 Lilith has seriously pissed me off.
3. Rises The Night by Colleen Gleason *Finished 05/07/09 Sebastian vs. Max... tough choice.
4. The Bleeding Dusk by Colleen Gleason *Finished 05/09/09 Aaah!!! What the heck?! I'm guessing she gets some new "powers"...
5. When Twilight Burns by Colleen Gleason *Finished 05/09/09 I grew to love Sebastian, but always rooted for Max.
6. As Shadows Fade by Colleen Gleason *Finished 05/10/09 Poor Sebastian, yay for the rest.
7. Crouching Vampire, Hidden Fang by Katie MacAlister *Finished 05/12/09 And Katie MacAlister continues to remind me why a whole shelf in my library is devoted to her.
8. Lady and the Vamp by Michelle Rowen *Finished 05/15/09 Hmm... not as good as I remember the first two were.
9. Stakes & Stilettos by Michelle Rowenn *Finished 05/16/09 Well this one was a plot pusher and I suppose the events in the book prior were to help this one along. However, I think using two books simply to further complicate matters that won't be resolved until the 5th book is a bit weak.

V. Frequent Flyers (Time Travel) *Finished 05/11/09

1. Thirty Nights with a Highland Husband by Melissa Mayhue *Finished 02/15/09 Fabulously shameless.
2. Highland Guardian by Melissa Mayhue *Finished 02/15/09 Is there something wrong with me for liking these kind of books?
3. Soul of a Highlander by Melissa Mayhue *Finished 02/16/09 Man, guilty pleasures are so much fun.
4. A Highlander of Her Own by Melissa Mayhue *Finished 02/17/09 Brain candy rocks.
5. Broken by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/12/09 Aww, baby were twins!
6. The Named by Marianne Curley *Finished 04/23/09 Cute story, but there's more "telling" than "showing". :)
7. The Dark by Marianne Curley *Finished 04/26/09 I know who the soul-mate pairs are!
8. The Key by Marianne Curley *Finished 04/27/09 You know, this series just ended up pissing me off. Tragedy for the sake of tragedy and jerks getting their way does not make me happy.
9. What, No Roses? by Marianne Mancusi *Finished 05/11/09 Super-predictable, but cute nonetheless.

VI. Smoking Section (Djinn and Dragons) *Finished 06/17/09

1. The Akhenaten Adventure by P.B. Kerrr *Finished 04/12/09 I had forgotten how cute this series is!
2. The Blue Djinn of Babylon by P.B. Kerrr *Finished 04/14/09 Yay! Alan and Neil are human!
3. The Cobra King of Kathmandu by P.B. Kerrr *Finished 04/17/09 Man, I love this series! It's so addicting!
4. Day of the Djinn Warriors by P.B. Kerrr *Finished 04/19/09 Hmm... the way it ended, it could be the end of the series, but it could easily continue. I vote for continue.
5. Dragon Bones by Patricia Briggs *Finished 06/14/09 Wow, that was an excellent read, almost an epic. Can't wait to read the next one!
6. Dragon Blood by Patricia Briggs *Finished 06/14/09 Yeah, P. Briggs rocks the shiznit. That was such a good duology. I think I'm saving her other duology as a treat to look forward to!
7. Ill Wind by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/16/09 Ooh, this is a fun series. Very different in style, and Caine sure knows a lot about weather and physics!
8. Heat Stroke by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/16/09 That's it. I'm hooked on this series! You have no idea where she's going to take you!
9. Chill Factor by Rachel Caine *Finished 06/17/09 I like the story line and the series, but everything is at break-neck speed, few chapter breaks or breaks within chapters and the stories end with a rush and begin with the same feeling. Maybe that's the intent, but it's a bit intense and makes it hard to really enjoy.

VII. Ups & Downs (Angels/Demons, Gods, etc.) *Finished 05/25/09

1. Haunted by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/09/09 Aaah! Only three left?!
2. No Humans Involved by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/14/09 Yay! I knew they'd get together!
3. Personal Demon by Kelley Armstrong *Finished 03/14/09 Why'd the ending have to be so ominous? Man, now I'm tempted to by the next one in hardcover, not sure if I can wait...
4. Dogs and Goddesses by Jennifer Crusie, Anne Stuart, and Lani Diane Rich *Finished 03/22/09 The dogs were definitely Crusie, but the paranormal and romance came from the other two. Cute.
5. Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn *Finished 05/17/09 Interesting story line, but sometimes it read a little dry. I'm hoping that's due to the fact it's the first in a series.
6. Changeling by Yasmine Galenorn *Finished 05/17/09 Reading better than the first one. Even though Delilah is meant to be the main character, you still get the feeling that the author "likes" Camille best.
7. Darkling by Yasmine Galenorn *Finished 05/22/09 I'm liking these books and I wish I had more time to just sit down and read them.
8. Dragon Wytch by Yasmine Galenorn *Finished 05/23/09 These ladies have quite an amount of work to do.
9. Night Huntress by Yasmine Galenorn *Finished 05/25/09 Finally, things are starting to go their way... a little bit!

1. Shadowland by Meg Cabot *Finished 02/08/09 I'm hooked.
2. Ninth Key by Meg Cabot *Finished 02/08/09 This series is like crack.
3. Reunion by Meg Cabot *Finished 02/08/09 Get with Jesse, already!
4. Darkest Hour by Meg Cabot *Finished 02/08/09 OMG... must keep reading...
5. Haunted by Meg Cabot *Finished 02/09/09 I may love Jesse more than I should...
6. Twilight by Meg Cabot *Finished 02/09/09 What do you mean there aren't any more? Why you wanna make me cry?
7. Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris *Finished 03/22/09 Different from her Sookie books, but still good.
8. Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris *Finished 03/23/09 Eew, I know they aren't really siblings, but I don't like where she's going with this.
9. An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris *Finished 03/25/09 I'm deeply disturbed.

2. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/02/09 Excellent the second time around still.
3. Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/03/09 Breaks my heart knowing what's coming for the two of them.
4. Club Dead by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/04/09 Stupid Bill.
5. Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/04/09 Debbie Pelt got what she deserved.

7. Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/06/09 Quinn does funny things to my insides. In a good way.
8. All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/07/09 Andre sucks. Literally, but I mean in a bad way.
9. From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris *Finished 04/08/09 I'm sorry to see Quinn "go", but it was a great book.

I decided to have a spot where I could post other paranormals I read this year that either don't fit into my categories, or that go beyond my categories. This is just out of interest to see how many paranormals I read a year. I'll list them from #82 on (since I will have read 81 books prior to this list). I'm not doing strikethroughs here because I won't enter them in until they're finished anyways.

I borrowed the latest Sookie book from my friend in hardback and we had the first in the series as a book club choice, so I reread all of the books again- so I've read 8 of them twice this year! So for #82-89, no comments since I've already made some!

82. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris *Finished 07/30/09
83. Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris *Finished 07/31/09
84. Club Dead by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/01/09
85. Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/01/09
86. Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/02/09
87. Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/03/09
88. All Together Dead by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/03/09
89. From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/04/09
90. Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris *Finished 08/06/09 Hoo-boy! I can't believe I'm warming up towards Bill... and I have no idea whom I want for Sookie now!
91. Real Vampires Have Curves by Gerry Bartlett *Finished 09/08/09 Reminds me of the Queen betsy books in that there is a vampire totally snubbing tradition.
92. Real Vampires Live Large by Gerry Bartlett *Finished 09/09/09 This is a really cute series, and now I'm lovin' "Jerry" more and more.
93. High Stakes by Erin McCarthy *Finished 09/11/09 Ooh, I've been wanting to try this series, and I'm glad I did. I like the characters a lot and can see lots of flyaways into other books.
94. Bit the Jackpot by Erin McCarthy *Finished 09/12/09 This was a cute premise and I liked that she didn't do the obvious and focus on the romance that was most noticeable in the previous book.
95. Bled Dry by Erin McCarthy *Finished 09/14/09 That's it. I have a crush on Corbin. Is that sad? Maybe a little... but he's a sweetheart. Yummy sweetheart.
96. Barely Bewitched by Kimberly Frost *Finished 09/19/09 Hmm, oddly enough I believe I may have preferred this second book over the first in the series.

I can't believe you're doing TWO 999 challenges. What are you, nuts?

I've already reccommended these books, but they would definitnely cover the vampire section:

1. The Rest Falls Away
2. Rises The Night
3. The Bleeding Dusk
4. When Twilight Burns
5. As Shadows Fade

all by Colleen Gleason.

"What are you, nuts?" I'm sorry, have we, or have we not known each other since you were about 3? Yes. I am all sorts of nuts. I'm a big ol' can of Deluxe Mixed Nuts. Simply being one type of nut is too limiting. Wow. Could I have ran with that phrase any further? Likely, but I'll force myself to stop. Question for anyone out there reading this... I'd like some feedback on some new series I'm looking into, what do you think? Any others you'd recommend? Thanks!

Considering:
Marinane Curley's The Named series
Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series
Gerry Bartlett's Glory St. Clair series
Erin McCarthy's Vegas Vampires series
Tate Halloway's Garnet Lacy series
Dakota Cassidy's Accidental Friends series
Jennifer Rardin's Jaz Parks series
Madilyn Alt's Bewitching Mysteries series

There are so many out there to choose from! I need help deciding where to start! So many books... so little time (and money)...

(I have all of the Katie MacAlister, MaryJanice Davidson, Candace Havens, most of Patricia Briggs, Julie Kenner, Kimberly Raye, and I am going to start Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld and Yasmine Galenorn's Sisters of the Moon).

I pretty much have every series you asked about except for 1. I'm reading the first book in Gerry Bartlett's vampire series and so far it is very good. I also have read the first book in Tate Hallaways Witch/Vampire series and thought it was very good. As For the others I have them all except for Marinane Curley's The Named series, but haven't read them yet.

I often recommend Marianne Curley's Guardians of Time series. I loved the first two books, The Named and The Dark. The third book, The Key, was good but she tends to end things rather abruptly which is pretty much my only complaint about the series as a whole.

I love the Weather Warden books. The only downside to those is Rachel Caine's love of the cliffhanger! David is one of my favorite fantasy heros.

I haven't read any of the others although they all sound interesting.

Marinane Curley's The Named series
Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series

I have read the above series, I love them, Marianne Curley is a great writer really a great read. Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series is great, I have her new series starting with Undone on my shelf to read, I think it's Outcast Season.

The series below are all on my TBR shelf, I have had great recommendations on all of them.

Gerry Bartlett's Glory St. Clair series
Erin McCarthy's Vegas Vampires series
Tate Halloway's Garnet Lacy series
Dakota Cassidy's Accidental Friends series
Jennifer Rardin's Jaz Parks series
Madilyn Alt's Bewitching Mysteries series

This is a fun challenge, but I think I may enjoy it all when it's done- I can read whatever I want without worrying about categories!

I think that is what I find the hardest about this challenge having to go with categories. My taste in books change from day to day so I find a have to change things around a bit to suit my moods. I'm only about 40 books in so I hope I can just stay on track so I can finish this challenge......lol!

I know! It's like I'm being restricted. Well, I suppose I could just read what I want and not worry about the challenge, but that's just crazy talk! We're halfway through the year, so if you're halfway through your books, you should be fine by the end of the year!

See?! I knew you'd like the rachel caine books :) they ARE intense, but they are good and not horribly gorey or depressing. I read these one books about demons etc and while they were good, they were super stressful and not uplifting - and very violent. Makes the weather warden books seem tame haha. Enjoy!!!

Woo-hoo, I finished! I'm sure that I'll read more Paranormal books, and I'll post them. Now off to finish my general 9-9-9 Challenge! Still have 21 to go on that one...

I'm such a geek, I'm so proud of myself and then I realize... if I've read 81 books here plus the ones that didn't overlap on my other challenge... um... that's a lot of time sitting on my butt! But it's good times!

I totally agree with your assessment of The Snow Spider. I think I'm only going to give it one or two stars. It was disappointing after reading the Charlie Bone books. Did you go on and read the rest of the magician's trilogy?

Hey Kelley,

I did finish the trilogy because I was hoping it'd get better. The trilogy was totally passable. Hard to believe it was by the same author as the Charlie Bone books, isn't it?
