I feel like I'm floundering having just discovered Library Thing a few minutes ago...so any helps out there would be appreciated. Because I'm a personal historian, I've got a great interest in family histories, journals, diaries and enjoy Christian fiction, business books for women, as well biographies and the likes. I just turned 50 a few months ago, therefore, I felt this was a good place to fit in. I'd love to here from some of you to give me tips on what and how I should best work my way through this site. I also enjoy writing/journaling and line dancing.

First things first....

Breathe in; breathe out slowly; repeat as often desired.

Hi Shirley! Welcome to LibraryThing and the Age of Realization. Prior to 50, you think you can still do anything you could when you were a teenager. This is when it all begins to hit the fan. Pardon the sarcasm; It's all true, but I've never been 'graceful' at bad news.

Working your way through the site -- Did you take the tour? If not, log out, and you should be at the Home Page, which should allow you to look around 'safely'. Otherwise, there's things to set up on ~your~ Home Page, and your Profile Page. I spend most of my time here on the Talk pages, but that's just me.... Feel free to stop in at the Green Dragon for good conversation and ale. I hear it's pretty good, but as I don't imbibe, I just take them at their word. They're also planning a New Year's Eve Chat, so you may want to get in on that.

OOHHH!!!!! I rhymed!!!! It was an accident; I swear it was!

There's lots of areas to explore. And don't be afraid to ask questions.

See you around!

You might try checking out the library of our members. It's a way to see who has like interests. Then look in to some of the groups and see if there are any you like. Also you might check out some of the Challenges and see if there may be something you'd like to try.

I found LT between Christmas and New Year's, so I can relate to your feelings. I originally thought I would just use the site to catalog our library. However, I joined this group and the 50 Book Challenge group. Now it's been days and days since I've done any cataloging--lots yet to do!--but I am checking the website every day to see what cooking in the groups. Welcome!

Welcome!

One of the things to keep in mind is that each person uses LT however suits them best. Some people catalog books they own, others catalog books they've read, and some people use it to keep track of their wishlists. You choose!

Another useful feature that you can tailor to your own desires is the tagging. When you put in a book, you can tag it any way you like--note the category (mystery, history, cookbook), or tag it "TBR" if it's one you haven't read yet, etc. Take a look at some other libraries to see what people have done.

I'm like lbradf in that I started out being so happy I could catalog my books but then finding the groups endlessly fascinating. Discussions are almost always very civil and often funny. There are also endless topics, not only relating to books but also to such things as what you ate for dinner or what the weather is like!

Note that when you click on "talk" from your home or profile page, you'll see all topics. But you can choose just to look at your groups or topics you've already posted to (these choices are in the left column). Finding a topic you're interested in (such as histories or Christian fiction) will usually result in discovering a long list of books you'd be interested in reading.

Good luck and don't hesitate to post more questions!

#4 lbradf - Hi and welcome! It took me 9 months to catalog my books - from October 07 to June 08. I took it a little at a time. One thing that helped me trendously was to get a Cue Cat - it scans ISBN numbers and is so easy to use. The only caveat I offer is that you need to go back and check which cover it's scanned in, and, if it's important to you, change the cover to what you really have.

I personally have location tags because I want to know where my books are in the house. I figured out within about 50 or so books of starting that I needed some way of locating my books. Most people don't do that, but there are a few of us hard-core "purists" who like to know where books are, don't have them organized on their shelves, and have too many to just be able to keep them all in mind. It also helps when cataloging because you can just catalog where your books are, then find and group authors later if you wish.

Thanks for the encouragement. I was glad to hear that you liked using the Cue Cat--I've been wondering whether to pick that up. As much as I enjoy all other aspects of the site, I ultimately do want to get all of our books in here. We need the organizational help! Like you, I am using location tags. I've been frustrated too many times after my husband purchases a book only to get back home and find we already had the book (two additional copies once!).

I'm not sure whether I am joining this group merely by posting in it: I find your discussion threads quite relevant as I just retired in July at the age of 70. I began cataloging in January. It seems to be taking forever because I use our university pc labs. I copy down titles and authors of books on the shelves then bring them up here in my spare time on weekends to search the THING holdings. I have gotten to the point where I must move books to look at the shelves behind them. This is great fun, and Thing has been invaluable in giving me a viable place to do my cataloging. This is SO MUCH FUN!!!!!
