"The Book Thief" Spoiler-Free Discussion

February's book discussion is The Book Thief. So here is the spoiler-free discussion =)

I love historical fiction and this is one of the best HF books I have ever read. But is it historically accurate?

In general I think is it, Maddie. At least with perceptions and attitudes and overall feel. On the other hand, history is not my strongest subject.

I do really love this book though! I had been wanting to reread it for quite some time, so this is perfect. Since I was so excited to reread it I read rather a lot last night and am nearly halfway through. And I'm finding I am impressed all over again.

Wait I just started to post about the book then was confused because I didn't want to put any spoilers in here. Are we discussing with people who have read the book in this thread or is there a thread with spoilers?

I think we're starting a spoilerific thread soon too, once it looks like people have gotten started.

Just curious, how many people have started or are planning to soon?

8( I tried to get the book at my local library but there is a waiting list of 50 people for it.

I started it, but I don't know where I put my copy. I'll look for it later. I plan to read it with you guys.

I read it a while back, and am not really ready for a reread. I may comment on the thread from what I remember of the book.

I'm waiting for a friend of mine to get it at the local bookstore for me, we kinda did an exchange of books, he gets me The Book Thief and I give him The Gunslinger to keep it coz I didn't really like that one...But as soon as I get it I'll read it

I think Holly has my copy...but when I'll post from memory for now!

Something just occurred to me. Why are we having a spoiler-free thread when the narrator of the book tells us the ending at the beginning? ;)

Well, I found my copy. Now I have to find time to read it.

I have a copy and am starting to read it tonight or tomorrow morning.

#11 - The funny thing is throughout the whole book I didn't really know if the ending that the narrator revealed would be the real ending. I kept wondering if it was going to be one of those things with an unreliable narrator where you're told something but then things come out differently.... (Did anyone else do this too or am I just wacko? I won't reveal whether my suspicions were proved wrong or right!)

I agree elbakerone. When I first read it I was thinking, "Is the narrator really telling me the ending??"

I guess it just goes to show that Death really has no great secrets... or does it?

I'm on page 110 so far but expect to get much further over the next couple of days since I'll have more free time. There are things I want to say about the book but feel maybe I shoult bite my tongue since I haven't finished and can't post on the spoiler thread yet. I'll have to read faster!
