I'm hoping to get a strong opinion or two -- I really don't think I need to have both of these books: The Penguin Atlas of British & Irish History, from earliest times to the present day and The Oxford Illustrated History of Britain. My question is, which one should I keep? For some reason the Penguin Atlas is not coming up in the touchstones, oh well.

Purely an opinion: the Oxford text is one that I enjoyed in the space of an afternoon, but the treatment of the content was unusually shallow, even for a narrative history text. Still a good book, just not my first choice. The Penguin text is one I find slightly more interesting. The only real significant flaw in that one is typical for narrative histories- a little too dry. That is a minor crime, though one worth noting here.
