I was recently reading a rather tame novel that teetered on the edges of sexual encounters but really didn't have the guts to topple over. Annoyed, I went to my shelf for something more bolder, racier, and better written and realised I have an awful gap in my collection.

So can anyone recommend some great erotic fiction? Something both sexual and sexy, with great graphic sex scenes but also an interesting plot and characters. I don't mind a serious side to the plot, but overall I'm looking for something fun. I can handle mediocre writing but I'd much prefer good writing. I'd like something heterosexual, but anything bisexual or lesbian is also ok. A little S&M is fine if not welcome. In terms of genre, pretty much anything is fine, except perhaps westerns :)

What the Fuck: The Avant-Porn Anthology?

Susie Bright's Best American Erotica series?

In my experience (see my collection for details) what turns any person on is so unpredictable that any answer is more likely to disappoint than benefit.

Try reading reviews, or Amazon descriptions where these are available. It's possible to search Amazon under erotica, although they make it difficult because young people can access their sites.

One person's 'So what?' can be another's nausea. It's no exaggeration, in my opinion, to say it's as hard as finding partners with like interests. For me, that's one of the things that makes erotica so fascinating!

At least, when you've found something you like, that gives you clues you can use to find more!

Jesse: when I read the first title I thought you were making fun of me for asking a stupid question or something. But that anthology looks pretty cool - I hope I can get a copy. The other one is available on BookMooch, I'll see if I can get it there. Thanks!

Clifford: you make a good point. Looking through your library I wasn't sure what would be fun and what would just be too weird for me at the moment. Frankly I'm not sure where to start - perhaps I should take a look at your collection once I've experimented with the genre a bit. An anthology might be a better idea for now.

Also, since I'm reading Fear of Flying by Erica Jong at the moment, I think I'll try Fanny after that. I checked out a few reviews and it seems to be what I'm looking for. Has anyone here read it? What do you think?

Bear in mind that the Best American is a series... Now defunct.

And yeah. It seemed that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the touchstone to work on the first title.

Mayhap if I just use an ... What the Fuck: The Avant-Porn Anthology.

You also may want to bear in mind that Susie Bright (LT author)has referred to the Meese Report as one of the most erotically-charged pieces of writing she's ever read.

Edit: if I remember correctly, the Best American Erotica anthologies also have companion series that deal specifically with subset erotica (ie. Best American Lesbian Erotica, etc.)

I have really stopped reading books on the topic and have reverted to internet seaches. Problem is that most "stories" are badly written but in most websites you have the ability to narrow down to your favourite lifestyle by using search criteria. Are there any places that really good erotica is available on the web, thats free and different?

For a good-natured romp, I recommend These Lawless Worlds. It has a plot, and plenty of sex, and even some plot-affecting sex. Of course it also has aliens; not sure if that's your cup of tea.

Anything by or edited by Pat Califia/Patrick Califia, Susie Bright, Alison Tyler, Rachel Kramer Bussel, or Cecilia Tan. And there's many others.
