I'm reading Flashman At The Charge right now and Russian serfdom is a prominent feature. Anyone have any good suggestions to learn more about this aspect of Russian history during the Tsars? I'm looking for a Gulag: A History about serfdom.

Thanks!

May have answered my own questions: Lord and Peasant in Russia.

I have only read historical fiction on the subject (The Crown and the Crucible, though it does have an informative 40 page long historical introduction), but your find does look interesting.

Other search results:
A Life Under Russian Serfdom: The Memoirs of Savva Dmitrievich Purlevskii, 1800-68 by Boris B. Gorshkov
The Peasant in nineteenth-century Russia (conference papers)
Serfdom and Social Control in Russia: Petrovskoe, a Village in Tambov
By Stephen L. Hoch

Hmm, never even knew there was scholarly study of "servile systems of production"...

One more:
The Russian Peasantry, 1600-1930: The World the Peasants Made by David Moon (1999)

Doesn't seem to be in LT, but it got a good notice in Slavic Review, though a mixed one in the Journal of Social History. It seems to be intended as an introductory survey.

Interesting that I seemed to find more books on the abolition of serfdom than on the institution itself.
