The old thread has more than 200 messages, so it is too long.

In this topic we can list all the things that cannot be translated on pages that otherwise are translated.

I hope that Tim et al. sometimes reads this group and solves our problems.

On profile page of an organization there is text like this:
Organization XX is one of more than 5,000 organizations on LibraryThing. XX is listed as a "non profit."

Example non profit organization:
bencouraged

The word non profit cannot be translated.

edited to add a link to a non profit organization

I think that in Finnish this would be a "rekisteröity yhdistys", which is nation-specific but best conveys the sense.

The problem is that it is not added in the translation software, not that Anneli does not know how to translate it.

Thanks for restarting the thread - I think I need to return to doing some translations...:)

In the header of the browser, the header line reads "GirlFromIpanema's books", when viewing my catalogue via the English domain.

Problem is, it also reads "GirlFromIpanema's Bücher" in German.

A Genitive in German never has an Apostrophe (right now it looks a bit silly).

The solution would be to pull the genitive S out of the "SUB"-tag and leave it to the translators to find the correct translation. This would also allow for languages that don't form a genitive with 's or do something else entirely (free positioning of the SUB tag in the clause, which is not possible right now).

I am wondering if I should start a wiki page with those un-translatables so we can have some manageable list that Tim and company can work through. Any reasons not to? Thoughts?

That's why I am keeping this untranslated on the Bulgarian page. It looks silly.

CK: Series on the "Your books" page is also un-translatable as a column name. It is translated on the Styles page but the translation is not used on the catalog itself

I have thought about a wiki page, too. But maybe we should ask Tim first.

13AnnieMod
gen. 14, 2010, 12:40 pm

well - technically everyone can make a wiki page when it is important and that will get us a bit better organized. Even if Tim and the LT stuff never decide to fix them (and we will keep the question going for reporting and so on - we just need a summary so we do not end up reporting the same thing over and over. :)

You are right. It would be useful to us even if the LT staff doesn't read it.

I'll start on it and post back here when I had made some progress :)
Back to translating ;)

Another one, that the other translators might want to check for their languages and add their "me too"s here:

While subject (book data) is identical with subject (e-mail or talk message) in the english language, it is not in German (and probably a few other languages): On the German new message page, instead of "Thema", the field for the subject of the message is now labelled "Schlagworte" which is subject headings (library-speak). From the "All translated text" page it is clear that there is only one label for both.

The label for "Subject" (message) on this page: http://www.librarything.de/subject/German+literature
needs to be separate from
the label(s) for "Subject" (category) on this page:
http://www.librarything.de/ajaxinc_forumpost.php?groupid=897&groupname=Bug+C... .

On connections page there are expressions that cannot be translated. They are yellow, but they don't show when I click the translate link. They are not in the remaining page, either.

On the organization's profile page the type is shown like this:
SUB1 is listed as a "SUB2 ."

SUB2 cannot be translated.

ReedMRCLibrary is listed as a "multicultural resource center."

On the German book details page, the drop down list that allows to select the role of an author is translated, but "Author" should be "Autor" in German.

24karakus
abr. 4, 2010, 9:44 am

Above mentioned problem in the drop down list has now been corrected, (thanks for that!), but in the work details page, the author of a work is still indicated by "(Author)" after the name, and correctly by "Autor" in front of it. See e.g.

Autor Rolf Dübner (Author)

This could be a problem of translation or a mixup of languages.

Please find a way to put date components into SUB tags...

I just found this jewel on the LT-ER page:
"Lieferung für April 2010: Bitte bis Friday, April 23rd um 24 Uhr MEZ anfordern."
(April 2010 batch: Request by etc. etc.)
http://www.librarything.de/er_list.php?sort=quantity&program=earlyreview&amp...

Would it be a problem to code this as:
SUB1 batch: Request by SUB2, SUB3 SUB4 at SUB5? The bits and pieces for the dates are available around the page in translated form, aren't they, so no need to make it fixed text? Also, this way there wouldn't be a need to rewrite and retranslate the sentence every month, but every translator team could arrange the SUBs in the sequence fitting into their language system, and translate the day names, suffixes and months once and for all.

In German the sequence of dates is always day/month/year. Also, the date numerals have been taken from the English list, instead of making them simple numbers 1,2,3 plus suffixes -st, -nd, -rd, etc, added through coding or translation. In German, there isn't a suffix but a simple point (23. April 2010).

Same goes for most of the European languages I know: Their suffixes (if any) differ from the English ones, and their sequence is day/month/year (1° de Abril 2010)

There are probably a dozen places around the site, where this problem occurs. I'll add them to this post, when I see them.

(Can I have a pony?) ;-D

Right here in the new topic box in Talk, two very obvious ones:

-(reported before by me, see #16)"Subject" label is linked to english word subject which is identical with the library subject (header). In German it is not, so a very wrong word shows up as the label. Separate label needed for message subject in Talk.

-(this is new:)"Message" label for the message box in Talk: Was/is translated, but translation does not show up (still in English).

Unfortunately, this feature has been disabled due to new Twitter follow limit policies

Reported before, but still not fixed:

http://www.librarything.de/addbooks

Below the list of available libraries:
"Or Wähle aus 690 anderen Quellen weltweit aus."

"Or" is English, the rest is German.

The sentence showed up on the "remaining translations" page, and I duly translated it, but it does not show up ("Where?" brings me to the addbooks page, though, so the connection is there). Seems it's two different labels here, one old, one new.

The list of "other authors" draws the "role" from the table for the English names of the roles, not from the translated German table.
When adding/changing the roles, the German list is shown, but after saving the English roles show:

Weitere Autoren
Contributor – Dresing, Uschi
Author – Grünewald, Axel
Editor – Escher, Jürgen
Contributor – Rose, Romani
Contributor – Boström, Jörg

In English: Showing matching works 1 - 25 of about 1,368
In Finnish: Näytä vastaavat teokset 1 - 25 of about 1,368

I cannot translate of about because in Finnish language we don't use prepositions to express partial amount.

In Finnish this should be: Näytä vastaavat teokset 1 - 25 noin 1368:sta.
