Hi,
I'm looking for movies, tv shows, and video games that have been made into successful books. I'm NOT looking for novelizations. A good example is Star Wars. There are a ton of books that go beyond the movies. Are there any others?

I'd like to make a bulletin board guessing game for my library, but if they're all books-into-movies, it won't be much fun. I already have Peter Pan, which is a trick question because it was a play, then a book, then a movie.

I'm primarily interested in books and movies for kids (pre-k to age 12), but I'm having trouble finding any, so I'll take any suggestions at all.

Thanks!

Hello Msbock,

Usually the books that you are looking for originates from movies with original screenplays and end up successful in the box office. Movies like Shrek, Toy Stories, Terminators and Indiana Jones are the most likely movies that end up releasing book series like the ones you are looking for.

Thanks

Erick

Thanks Erick. Shrek was a book first (by William Steig, and bearing only a slight resemblance in story). I'll look into Terminator and Indiana Jones. Any picture book with animation stills for illustrations will be an immediate give-away.

Thanks for the suggestions!

There are plenty of Walt Disney spin-off stories in the Grolier Disney Wonderful World of Reading series.
Robin Hood sends a message for example.
Another series you could look at is Baby's First Disney Book (for younger ones) Dopey's bedtime is a good example.
Sonic the Hedgehog had plenty of books too Robotnik's oil.

I'm wondering about the Castle series and the books which were written? I think the books were after the TV show (or concurrent), but not positive. They are pretty good mystery books in and of themselves, purporting to be written by Richard Castle himself, who was a writer of mysteries in the TV show. An example is Heat Wave.

>8 MrsLee:
I've not watched the series - I have to admit; but it does look like a lot of fun.
I also happen to know that they've dropped in more than one Firefly reference - which is how the series came to my attention.
I get the impression that the show does not take itself too seriously.

The fact that the books purport to be written by the fictitious author from the series, complete with a photo of Nathan Fillion is just brilliant marketing - a mystery book written by a mysterious author. What a stroke of genius!
But that the books have become New York Times bestsellers certainly doesn't hurt.

Thanks for the heads up. :)

>9 Ravenspine: I very much enjoyed the series, but I think I quit watching around the 3rd or 4th year due to lack of cable channels and internet skills to find it. Also, it isn't on Netflix. It is one that I am seriously considering purchasing, but don't have the expendable funds at the moment. The Firefly references are fun! Not plentiful, just enough to enjoy. The books are quit readable, too.

>8 MrsLee: The first book was being written during the first season, so they align book 1 to season 2, etc.

Probably my favorite Firefly reference was the Halloween episode, where he pulls out his Mal outfit and his daughter scoffs at it being five years ago.
