I'm looking for picture book from/about Portugal. I'm after (1) Books translated in English that are easily available but that are written or illustrated by Portuguese authors/illustrators (2) books that are somehow culturally specific (and may or may not be available in English) (and these two criteria may not be mutually exclusive of course). Basically I want to learn more about Portuguese picture books and am after recommendations for brilliant books that I might enjoy with my own kids.
2 books I have recently discovered are:
My Very Own Lighthouse - Contemporary Picture Books from Europe (Hardcover)
by Francisco Cunha (Author), Joao Leal (Translator
The moon has written You a Poem : Poems to read with Children on Moonlit Nights by Jose Jorge Letria, Andre Letria, and Maurice Riordan
Thanks in anticipation,
There are two "recent" major publishing names in what regards children books in Portugal, and if may say so, pretty amazing:
José Jorge Letria was his books published by Assírio Alvim (major publising house in Portugal) and his soon usually ilustrates the books. He was also a '70s topical singer in Portugal, friend of Zeca Afonso et al.
Hope it helps.
Sugerimos a pesquisa de mais alguns ilustradores de livros, como: Joana Quental, Rui Paes, Marina Palácio, Elsa Fernandes, Alfredo Martins, Julio Vanzeler, Paulo Gailindro, Kala, Bernardo Carvalho, Fedra Santos, João Botelho, Miguel Rocha.
"Piloto e Lassie, uma outra estoria de Romeu e Julieta" (another story of Romeo and Juliet), etc. My name is Dulce Rodrigues. You may also visit my page at Librarything.
