The upgrade's coming in late May. The news stories are focusing on the Facebook and "social networking" capabilities, but what's really nice is that we'll finally be getting improved sorting capability. It doesn't say exactly how it's going to work, and I'm hoping it's a tagging system, but I'll settle for anything, even if it's a folder-tree system.

Excellent news! I'm looking forward to the sharper fonts and PDF pan and zoom features.

Do you know if the new software will work for the K1?

xenchu, follow the link I provided and go to the end of the main text portion of the Amazon page. It says, under the header Information for Kindle (1st Generation) Users, "The most recent software update version of Kindle (1st Generation) is version 1.2." Checking my K1, I see that that's the software that I've currently got on it.

Now checking my K2, I see it's currently running version 2.3. That leads me to think that K1 and K2 are updated along different software tracks, so I have a feeling that means the version 2.5 update is going only to K2 (which makes sense since it has the number "2" in it).

Also, note that the version 2.5 software includes some improved PDF features. I wasn't aware that PDF was natively readable on K1. (Or is it? I really just keep my K1 as a back-up unit and also subscribe to a couple sci-fi mags on it, Analog and Asimov, and I don't use PDFs anyway, so I really don't know about PDF-K1 compatibility.) Assuming, as I think is true, that PDF isn't natively readable by K1, then that would also suggest that this new software upgrade is only going to be available for K2 (and also of course for K-DX, though I personally don't have that larger version and don't want it since it's bulkier and heavier than I'd like for my pocketbook).

Sorry, but I have a feeling K1 users are going to be out of luck. Personally, I only have about three pages of files on my K1 hard-drive, though I do have more on an SD-card. It's my K2 that's got nearly sixty pages of stuff on my home screen.

And you know, now that I come to think about it, I wonder if this sorting feature is designed specifically for the K2 and K-DX configuration, where all the eBook files are kept in a single root directory on the hard-drive. The K1 of course has that different configuration, with the SD-card (which I love and wish Amazon had kept on the K2, but we can't have everything).

I think K1 users are out of luck, too. I have emailed Amazon customer service and asked for the collections feature. I have 13 pages, which is not too bad, but as an early adopter, I feel that they should be able to do that small thing for us. I would love to put all my samples in one collection. That's all I am asking for. Maybe if enough K1 people email them, they will listen?

I am really looking forward to categories/folders/sorting/whatever they implement to let me keep my sci-fi away from my non-fiction away from my embarrassing trashy novels!

No, no update for K1 users. From the announcement:

Information for Kindle (1st Generation) Users

The most recent software update version of Kindle (1st Generation) is version 1.2. If you don't have it, you can download version 1.2.

Well, i was afraid that the upgrade would not be available for the K1.

However, I will check to see if I have the latest version of the K1 software.

Thanks for all the information everyone!
