I was waiting for the group "host" to say something, but... :)

So... starting off completely randomly, is there a women's/lesbian bookstore where you live? How often do you shop there compared to other places? Pleasure or duty?

For my part, I try to buy as much as I can in the 2-3 gay bookstores I can reach.

There's a gay bookshop in Nashville *somewhere* about 30 minutes from where I live, but I've never been there. Never seen the need to. I have a few lesbian novels and the like, but they're not even a dent in my huge collection...

Hi!

In Columbia, MO, "The 9th Street Bookstore" is a wonderful independent store that is supported by both gay and straight. I believe it is woman owned and it's management are lesbian and feminist. They offer a small yet diverse lesbian/feminist/environmental/political selection of magazines, books and materials.

So far, it's the only one I've been able to find in the area. It's a very real asset to the community and a small slice of heaven! I would support them over Amazon or B&N any day.

Yeah, I feel an obligation to shop in independent bookstores as much as possible... I spend a lot on books but I also WANT many, so I can't afford to pay full price all the time.

I don't buy only lesbian/gay stuff in women's bookstores. I picked up some great travel, design and art books in them... literature of all kinds...

Hartford's Reader's Feast closed a few years back. I miss it. Whenever/wherever I travel, I google bookstores and try to make a point of getting to at least one independent. Even better if it's a women's/lesbian bookstore.

There used to be one until last year, but it had to close due to competition, probably because of the bookstore I'm working at now. Our gay/lesbian section is very small, sadly - but my colleague and I are working on getting more titles for our store. It's not much, and it certainly can't replace the store that had to close, but it's something.

Did any of you see the discussion "racial segregation in Borders" in Book Talk group? The example of gay sections in major bookstores vs. gay bookstores came up several times.

How are people finding this place if no one's talking? :)

fwiw - there is an online bookseller dedicated to lesbian (and some gay) fiction:

http://www.scp-inc.biz.

The best place to buy is usually an indy/glbt bookstore, but if you do buy online, you can get a number of books from this site (and I believe it treats the authors/publishers better than amazon.com).

I buy books at Borders when I find them, Now Voyager in Provincetown when I get there, and then mostly online.

We're in upstate NY, and the closest lesbian/gay book source is actually a lesbian/gay cafe that has a big shelf of books (along with some other stuff -- videos, rainbow candles, pride whatnots, etc.). We bought a couple of books there the last time we went. Honestly, though, we tend to shop at B&N more than I wish we did...but options are pretty limited.

There's an excellent women's bookstore in Chicago, Women and Children First. Unfortunately, they are having some financial difficulties (thanks to the usual culprits), so if any of you don't have a handy women's bookstore, please consider ordering your books via WCF's website!

Full disclosure: I have no financial interest in WCF nor do I work there. I just love the store!

There use to be a great women's bookstore in Denver. However like most small stores it closed. I try to get mine mostly from the Tattered Cover. But B&N usually has a wider selection. I also try to but online straight from the publisher if I can.

Oh you lucky you who have access to book stores like that. THe closest gay&lesbian bookstore I am aware of is in Amsterdam, and the closest women's bookstore I know is in Stockholm (I'm in Finland). I think I'll take a lok at that WCF site, I do quite often order books online.

what a shame. it seems that the WCF site only sends books within the US.

We have no bookstores here in N. Alberta. We are in a remote area and love the referrals to anything online.

Unfortunately, "The 9th Street Bookstore" in Columbia, MO has closed and unsure if they will reopen in the future. Quite a surprise and such a shame!

I've since moved to Boulder, CO, a book lovers nirvana. There is a lovely store here called "The Word Is Out". It's small, yet has a very nice selection and the owner, Louise, goes the extra mile to find all those little morsels that "cant be found". She is a lovely person and an absolute joy to deal with! She's a board member with the local business alliance, as well as works cohesively with area universities, women studies/gender programs, Boulder Pride and other LGBT orgs. She's quite dedicated to say the least. I dont think she nor the store plan on going anywhere for quite some time. LOL Her website could use some updating but check it out, and the store, if you get the chance!

Oh, one more thing!

Thanks Starbuck75 for the heads-up regarding the Tattered Cover!

Hi all,

I'm new to the group. I don't know of any women's bookstores near me, but Giovanni's Room in Philadelphia is probably the closest LGBT bookstore.

Hiya! Figured this was a goodish place to say hello, rather than starting my own thread.

I'm Kayla. I'm 26 and Canadian, and my current town doesnt have a lgbt bookstore:( Alas. There is a drug-riddled community centre that has a lending library though. I suppose that's something.

There's also a women's centre, out of which a Lesbian coffee group is run, and they have a small library as well. So, I guess I'm not completely bad off.

Hey Kayla, yeah I feel you there, I've never lived anywhere that has one, though the university library here has a surprising amount of queer cinema, go figure... I'm personally looking forward to moving somewhere bigger in the coming year.

Me too. Can't wait, though I'm undecided as to where. Maybe just back to Vancouver...which I'm very fond of and is very gay friendly..bookstores, films, you name it...but also not new. I feel like newness.

març 11, 2010, 4:16 pm

yeah, that's the great thing about the work I'm doing, theatre costumes, I can keep moving each season, always somewhere new- there's some sort of theatre just about everywhere.

Ooo, there are lesbian bookstores in Vancouver? Please, fill me in! (I live close by.)

Sounds wonderful neurorin

Danneeness.

The most famous would be Little Sister's ...if it's still there...it was caught up in a huge controversy quite as few years back, as books were siezed by American customs as pornography and a huge antidiscrimination case followed, which I believe it won...on Davie st.

Womyns Ware on Commercial also had a small book section when I used to go there. This is a sex shop though. You've been forwarned:P

For me, though, what I found (and liked most) about Vancouver that gay lit was mainstreamed...as in, in every bookstore. From the divey little second handers downtown, to the biggest ass Chapters in the GVRD. I actually bought my first books of lesbian erotica at my University bookstore (up at SFU)

26Danneeness
març 12, 2010, 8:16 pm

Little Sisters seems to be more of a sex store than a book store, from what I've seen... So I guess there's not really any that aren't also sex shops? Ah well.

I still miss Powell's, with their bookcases and bookcases of lesbian books.

OutLoud I think you mean. It's alright.

28QuiteTheHuman
març 13, 2010, 2:37 am

Little Sisters has a lot of variety...it does also have associated toy sales and stuff, and certainly a large selection of erotica and sex-manuals...but that's not all it is. At least, it wasn't. :/
