Descripció:
Poe Cottage is the final home of literary great Edgar Allan Poe. Poe spent his life moving from place to place in a futile search for greater literary recognition and an ever elusive financial security. His final move was in 1846, when he rented this cozy 1 1/2 story wood frame 1812 farmhouse in the Fordham area of what was then Westchester County, New York and is now of course part of the Bronx.

This move was different. His wife, Virginia was dying of tuberculosis, then commonly referred to as The Consumption, and it was hoped that the fresh air and peaceful surroundings would prove a healthful and serene setting. Poe, his wife and his mother-in-law Maria Clemm settled in hoping Virginia would be revitalized, but her condition worsened and she died less than a year later, in January, 1847.

Poe wrote his final works while living in the cottage, memorable pieces such as Annabel Lee, The Bells, Eureka and Landor's Cottage (inspired by his love for his Fordham home).

Poe died 2 years later, October 7, 1849. Although residing in this cottage at the time, he died while traveling in Baltimore, MD under very mysterious circumstances. Nobody knows for certain what caused Poe's death or even why he was in Baltimore when he was supposed to be en route to his home from Richmond, Virginia.

Tours of Poe Cottage are a wonderful way to learn more about the man. The gift shop is open during tour times and features a variety of Poe books and souvenirs.

Poe Cottage and the oasis of calm that is Poe Park are both scheduled for major renovation during 2008-2009, so check out the website of the Bronx County Historical Society, which maintains the cottage, for opening times and updates.
