Who we are
Founder and developer
Tim founded LibraryThing in August 2005 as a pet project, to catalog his own library and for academic and bibliophile friends. He had no idea it would explode like it did.
Tim grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts and went to Georgetown University. He spent much of his 20's dabbling in archaeology and pursuing a PhD in Greek and Latin at Michigan, but dropped out. Before founding LibraryThing, Tim developed educational software for Houghton Mifflin in Boston, and ran a variety of smaller websites.
Tim lives in Portland, Maine with his wife, the author Lisa Carey, and twelve year-old son Liam.
Librarian and head of LibraryThing for Libraries
Abby grew up on the coast of Massachusetts, and received a BA in Women's Studies from Mount Holyoke College. She then went to work for Tim at Houghton Mifflin while going to library school. She has MA and MLS degrees in History and Library Science from Simmons College. Abby worked as a corporate indexer/cataloger before leaving to become the first official employee at Tim's little bookish startup.
Abby lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with her wife Sara and their son Jasper. She loves libraries, theater, running, coffee, and oxford commas.
Director of UX and Developer
Christopher was born in Greenville, Mississippi and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended Mississippi State University and attained a B.A. in Art with emphasis in Graphic Design and Digital Media. He spent most of the 90s working on various research projects in digital media: mapping and data visualization of large data sets, archaeology dig site documentation and monitoring, 3D scanning and reproduction, and 3D virtual environments (CAVEs). Christopher became interested in the Web while it was still a research project among a few universities. Lucky for him, MSU was one of those universities. He's been developing websites since 1993. Recently, most of his work is related to user interfaces and mobile applications. Christopher became a member of LibraryThing in January of 2006 when he was hired by Tim to help with his little project.
Christopher has lived in various places: Washington D.C., Tampa, FL, Starkville, MS, Salt Lake City, UT, Mobile, AL and even briefly for two summers in Lahav, Israel. He currently lives in The Woodlands outside of Houston, TX with his wife, Ashley, and their daughter Kate. Christopher enjoys and spends his free time doing photography, painting, spending time with his family, auto racing, and, strangely enough, programming.
DeveloperChris is a native Baltimorean, hon. He made a lot of degree salad in school (a BBA in Business from Loyola College in Maryland, an MA in Italian Language from Middlebury and an MLS from North Carolina State University). He has worked at libraries doing data munging, MARC mushing and cataloging. He remembers well the musty book dust one wears after cataloging rare books! He had fun teaching Italian for a couple of years. Before coming to LibraryThing he worked on the Biblios cataloging editor project where he got to make something close to the editor he always wished he had as a cataloger.
Chris lives in Connecticut with his wife and two kids. He enjoys playing classical and fingerstyle guitar and recording old Beatles songs.
Kate McAngus Krieger
Librarian for LibraryThing for Libraries
Kate is a native Texan, specifically a 5th generation Austinite. She has a BA in English and Russian from Baylor University in Waco, TX, a MA in Slavic Languages & Literatures from the University of Virginia, and a MLS from Simmons College in Boston. Kate is done collecting degrees.
Kate enjoys yoga, running (in theory), cooking & baking, reading fiction, visiting the library with her kids, and cheering for the St. Louis Blues and the Houston Astros. Kate, her husband, son & daughter live in St. Louis with their dumpster dog Angus.
Kristi de Bree
TinyCat Management and Member Support
Kristi's passions are eating, cooking, outdoor exploration, travel, and eating (did we mention she loves food?). Kristi has a B.A. in Zoology and spent a semester in Tasmania where she fed kangaroos, explored the rainforest, and interacted with Tasmanian Devils.
After spending a summer campaigning for organizations like Environment America and the Human Rights Campaign, Kristi fell in love with the city of Portland (ME). She found a local, independent school to cultivate her joy of lifelong learning and general technology geekery before coming to LT in 2014. She currently lives on a lake with her husband Chris, Maine Coon cats Lucy and Mahli, and Pointer-Foxhound rescue Gunner. In her spare time, Kristi is learning to knit, paint, and practice permaculture on her property—where she can harvest food to eat. She loves high fantasy novels, self-help books, and thrillers!
