Ready Player One de Ernest Cline (davesmind, jbgryphon, fulner)
davesmind: Although Snow Crash is a classic of cyberpunk, I think Ready Player One has a more captivating story - especially if you played video games in the 80's
jbgryphon: RPO's OASIS owes it's existence as much to Neil Stephenson's Metaverse as to the miriad of geek universes that are included in it.
fulner: Ready player one is what Snow crash should have been. A story focused primarily on the inter-personal-relationships of others "online" in a futuristic version of the internet in which we live in a 3-D world as the real world around us crashes and burns. The biggest difference is Ready Player One Doesn't Suck. Still somewhat heretical, but its heresy can be easily dismissed on that the protagonist is an atheist.… (més)

Better than I thought it would be, this is a thrilling suspense novel about Hiro Protagonist, a pizza deliverer, computer hacker and warrior prince who sets out to find and destroy the man who has unleashed a deadly virus on the hacker community. Funny read. ( )

I had read about Stephenson and thought that his books, combining so many fascinating subjects, would be a great reading. I decided to start with Snow Crash, and the book actually lived up to my expectations throughout the first third, more or less. Then it became increasingly annoying, as the characters seemed to do things without any good reason, apparently motivated only by a vague and random need to move on with the book's plot. There isn't much logic left after a while and the last third of the book becomes more and more confusing and frustrating. This is one of the few books that I had to force myself to read to the end. Pizza delivery by the mob, a character named Hiro Protagonist, Motorcycle riding, samurai sword wielding characters - I’m not sure this story ages that well. Reading it as a teenager would’ve been better, but for now it was tough to make it through without rolling my eyes repeatedly. ( )

If a kid ever asks me what the 90s was like I feel like I could just hand them a copy of this and The Matrix and that will cover the beginning and end of it. Snow Crash is so 90s-cool that I could almost hear Garbage playing in the background as I read it. If you like linguistics, history, religion, swords, and cyberpunk anything you've probably already read this book. If those things sound cool to you and you haven't read this book, go ahead and give it a try, especially if you were a 90s kid. It's not a perfect novel--Hiro Protagonist is more interesting to talk about than to read about, especially when he spends pages and pages info-dumping instead of sword-fighting--but this is a critically important novel. Plus it inspired Second Life so...there's that, I guess. ( )

Hiro Protagonist (who has chosen his own name, of course) turns out to be entertaining company, and Mr. Stephenson turns out to be an engaging guide to an onrushing tomorrow that is as farcical as it is horrific.

Stephenson has not stepped, he has vaulted onto the literary stage with this novel.

A cross between Neuromancer and Thomas Pynchon's Vineland. This is no mere hyperbole.
