I don't know how to feel on this one. On one hand, I really liked Peter's character (mischievous, mercurial, charming and selfish) and Tinkerbell, as well as Tiger Lily (I also tend to be very bottled up, to my detriment). Hook was well written and tragic.

But there was absolutely NO reason for Moon Eyes to be repeatedly raped by Giant. Yes, he was a bad man, but we already knew that! Him escalating to rape tells us nothing new about either character and does not affect the plot at all. And then Tiger Lily marries him and Anderson doesn't mention anything about rape. It also makes no sense to me that the Sky People "look down on a man hitting a woman" but then also don't care that Tiger Lily doesn't want to marry Giant. You're either on the side of women or not. And then Phillip comes in and somehow converts every Sky Eater to believe in God (even Tiger Lily??) and reject Tik Tok as he is (which, even when Pine Sap tells Tiger Lily that this is her fault doesn't seem to affect her much). But once they chase the Englanders away everything goes back to normal and no one apologizes? Tiger Lily isn't angry at anyone?

These muddled approaches and unnecessary cruelty are why I had to go 2 stars. ( )

This was a hard one for me to rate. For one, I thought it was a really good story, but at the same time there were things that were really disappointing. If you didn't already know, this is a Peter Pan retelling told through the eyes of Tinkerbell. It starts before Tinkerbell ever meets Peter and is more about the relationship that is formed between Tiger Lily and Peter. Trigger warnings for this book: physical abuse, rape, depression, suicide, and transphobia. These things don't encompass big parts of the story, but they are in there. ( )

Very sweet, and yet not overly romantic. Didn't end like every "once upon a time," much better than what I had expected. ( )

Overall, this book was good. I enjoyed the way it embraced darkness but wasn't necessarily unhappy. The end of the book took a really thoughtful and interesting look at the ways in which people's lives change and overlap. There are a lot of stories about young people who meet their one true love and fight to be together in their perfect love forever. It's refreshing to read a story about people who fall in love with each other and other people. It's great to talk about the ways in which our love and feelings change and grow with us.

I think Tik Tok is the best character in this book. His story and the background story of Phillip's influence over the tribe are heartbreaking and powerful. It was fascinating to read about Tiger Lily and the villagers coming back together after all of the changes.

I really didn't like that this book was narrated by Tinker Bell. It resulted in us reading from many different points of view in a cheap way. It was more confusing and limiting than it was a gateway into the minds of each character. It was weird that she kept telling us how everyone felt.

This book is good, but I didn't really love it. There is a lot of introduction and explanation, so it took about 60 pages for things to start picking up. It took me forever to finish reading this even though it is a pretty easy read. ( )

Tiger Lily. By Jodi Lynn Anderson. July 2012. 304p. Harper Teen, $17.99 (9780062003256). Gr. 8-11.

In expressive, graceful language, Anderson tells the story of the fierce Tiger Lily and her thorny romance with the legendary Peter Pan. In remote Neverland, Tiger Lily has grown up with the Sky Eaters after being taken in by the shaman Tik Tok. At 15, already snubbed for her wild independence and nonwomanly hunting and fighting, Tiger Lily irrevocably changes her village when she rescues a shipwrecked Englander. Motivated by compassion, she fails to realize how his religious fervor poisons her tribe until it is too late. Her rescue captures Peter Pan's interest, and she is drawn to his strange mix of boyish enthusiasm, casual barbarity, and guarded loneliness. When Wendy Darling arrives on another English ship, Tiger Lily must decide whether to fight for her love or let him go. Narrated by Tinkerbell, whose empathy allows her to see into others' experiences, this wistful retelling has strong elements of tragedy, infused with regret, loneliness, and lost love, but its sensitive, passionate portrayal of familiar characters, here more damaged than we knew them, is captivating.--Krista Hutley
