Arrogant, self-willed and egotistical, Emma is Jane Austen's most unusual heroine. Her interfering ways and inveterate matchmaking are at once shocking and comic. She is 'handsome, clever and rich' and has 'a disposition to think too well of herself'. When she decides to introduce the humble Harriet Smith to the delights of genteel society and to find her a suitable husband, she precipitates herself and her immediate circle into a web of misunderstanding and intrigue, from which no-one emerges unchanged. Juliet Stevenson, an incomparable reader, is for many the voice of Jane Austen.… (més)

This BBC Radio presentation is a superb dramatization of Jane Austen's class novel. It is not narrated, nor is it the novel itself. Rather, it is an extended, radio play, a dramatization with a full cast of distinctive characters. The story is presented primarily through conversations between the various characters, with just enough narration to help the reader along. The voices are supplemented with sound effects of all kinds, as well as classical music at interludes between parts of the story. The voices are highly distinctive, so much that the listener needs no reminder as to who is who. Some familiarity with the story would be helpful but not essential. However, this work will mainly be appreciated by readers who have known and loved "Emma", and want to relive the experience of Austen's book with a playful, audio version. I am deeply impressed with this work, as with the other BBC radio dramatizations that I have listened to. ( )
