Mansfield Park is the study of three families--the Bertrams, the Crawfords, and the Prices. The story's heroine, Fanny Price, is at its center. She is adopted into the family of her rich uncle Thomas Bertram, and is condescendingly treated as a poor relation by "Aunt Norris." Of her cousins, only Edmund, a young clergyman, appreciates her fine qualities, and she falls in love with him. Unfortunately, however, he is drawn to the shallow and worldly Mary Crawford. Fanny's quiet passivity, steadfast loyalty, and natural goodness are matched against the wit and brilliance of her lovely rival. Jane Austen skillfully uses her characters' emotional relationships to explore the social and moral values by which they attempt to order their lives.… (més)

Agnes Grey de Anne Brontë (Medellia)
Medellia: Both books have sweet, shy, thoroughly virtuous protagonists, if you're a fan of that sort of character. (I am, and loved both novels!)

Lover's Vows de Elizabeth Inchbald (aulsmith)
aulsmith: The play they are rehearsing in Mansfield Park. Worth a quick skim.

I have always loved classic literature, especially the books written by women. Jane Austen is most definitely among my all time favorite authors both for her writing style and her characters. Her books truly come alive and they are endlessly enjoyable no matter how many times you read them. ( )

Whew, hard to rate. I find the ending disappointing, but the whole book is still extremely interesting and well-written. I want to know how other people have interpreted the character of Fanny (who I do love but also fear I share some of the worst features of) and the moral universe of Mansfield Park. I wish I had some better insight into why Jane Austen wrote this story as she did. ( )

I liked the ambition, not the characters. I didn't feel invested in the story until Fanny went to live with her parents, and the pace picked up. And then the pace picked up way too suddenly with the scandal. I think from a technical perspective, it makes sense that Edmund's development revolved around both Mary Crawford and Fanny Price. These two embody what is missing in the other. If only Fanny took herself a little less seriously, and if only Mary had better moral judgment, then I might actually like them. But I like that they were presented as these two extremes because it serves, for me, a representation of these dualities. Maybe that's just because I've been listening to too much Kendrick Lamar ("is it wickedness? or is it weakness?...").

And when I say I didn't quite like Fanny or Mary, I'm not raising the bar for just the female characters. I don't think any of the males were all that great. Edmund with the mansplaining, stop it. Tom with the rich spoiled kid mentality. Lord Bertram being excited about his niece becoming hot. They aren't the focus.

Shoutout to this feminist mic drop. “I should have thought,' said Fanny after a pause of recollection and exertion, 'that every woman must have felt the possibility of a man's not being approved, not being loved by someone of her sex, at least, let him be ever so generally agreeable. Let him have all the perfections in the world, I think it ought not to be set down as certain, that a man must be acceptable to every woman he may happen to like himself.” This still needs to be said now, in 2017, so there's that.

Other than gender roles, I appreciate the discussion of class and poverty and how Fanny came to realize that Susan could have been just as well educated as her if not for her lack of opportunities.

I appreciate the emotional honesty of Fanny being put off by Henry Crawford's advances and how she gears herself up for these exchanges and tries to be nice about it as much as possible. I felt that someone's trying their best might actually make it worse if you're not in that emotional state to receive them. I've been on the other side, the Henry Crawford annoying side, where sometimes I think about how maybe I just did it wrong, that if only I did it a little differently or tried harder, maybe I could turn things around. But I think for some people, as with Fanny, it's just that if you're not into someone, then any attempt to change their heart may just annoy them. What Jane Austen accomplishes here is miles beyond, and sorely missing, in what many romcoms say about relationships: in these romcoms, the message is that if you just keep trying, you'll soften the other person and it will all work out in the end. But really that results from a lack of sympathy and imagination about what the other person goes through internally.

There were parts I really liked, there were stretches I didn't care about. 3 stars sounds right. ( )

Not fun. Claustrophobic sense of being a dependant female around 1800. Really wonder what the author made of it. ( )

About thirty years ago, Miss Maria Ward of Huntingdon, with only seven thousand pounds, had the good luck to captivate Sir Thomas Bertram, of Mansfield Park, in the county of Northampton, and to be thereby raised to the rank of a baronet's lady, with all the comforts and consequences of an handsome house and large income.
