I picked this book up thinking it would be similar to the Blue Blood series. My first clue was the blatant hook of sexuality in the first 10 pages. I wouldn't recommend this as a YA book for anyone younger than 16, that's for sure. I know sex is everywhere, but if I want to read about heaving bosoms, panting and spreading of legs, I'd just pick up a trashy romance.

That said, once she got the sex out of her system, this book was enjoyable. Mimi Force and Oliver make an appearance, which I quite enjoy. Overlapping series help paint a broader picture. I find her take on the other worlds pretty fascinating - how she ties vampires and witches together, steeped in history. I'd give it 4, but the sex in the first chapter REALLY threw me off. I had to force myself to keep reading and change my expectations of the book. ( )

I've been trying to find more books about witches, and was really excited when I found this one. Luckily, I only borrowed it from my library and can give it back today. It started off really well, though it sounded more and more like a soap opera.

I didn't make it very far into the book, though I tried. I honestly stopped reading when Freya cheats on her fiance with his brother at their engagement party. I stared at the book, and said "That's it. I'm done."

I don't expect characters to be perfect, or to always make the right choices, but the cheating combined with the soap opera feel was too much. I was starting to make fun of the book before I'd even made it a fourth of the way through. ( )

This is written in a relatively light, entertaining style that makes it an unchallenging read but one that is a pleasure to sit down with. A well constructed, interesting story populated with great characters. ( )

The Beauchamp family of Joanna and daughters Ingrid and Freya are actually Norse goddesses, trapped on earth (‘Midgard’) after being expelled from their homeland (‘Asgard’) and forced to live as humans who can practice magic. Currently they live in the tiny coastal village of North Hampton. Ingrid and Freya were found guilty of being witches and hung during the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts in 1693, and as they are immortal, were born again to Joanna who, each time something happens to them, has to go through another pregnancy. After Salem, the ‘council’ decided that magical people of the world were no longer allowed to use their magic. This has worked okay up until now, but after several hundred years the witches are finding the confinement of their talents frustrating and so start using it in small ways by helping out their neighbours. Freya is engaged to Bran Gardiner (actually Loki), but is infatuated with his brother Killen (actually Balder) who she is having an affair with. People in the town start getting sick, one disappears, another is murdered, and a mysterious silver substance is appearing in the water around the world. Little do they know that Loki is encouraging the destruction of the gates between the worlds and must be stopped. A promising storyline, but one that just doesn't come together and is not done justice in this book which was disappointing. ( )

I initially thought that this was going to be an engrossing and quick read starting as it did with a wonderful description of the town where the main storyline was to take place. This idea was quickly dismissed when the younger of the two sisters was introduced.

The main characters of this book are the ‘witches’ mentioned in the title and, in my opinion, the Author could have left the younger sister out of the book altogether and it would not have done any harm. She is written as being perfect in a non-perfect way and, after struggling through this book for almost half its entirety I finally got fed up of reading about her heaving boobs and put the book to one side. I did like the character of the Mother; she was practical and quite strong with her elder daughter possessing a lot of her traits. However, these two characters were not enough to keep me ploughing on until the end.

Locale description were wonderful, and make the reader feel as if they are walking the dunes, can hear the crash of the waves and, in some instances long for a life in a sleepy small town that the world does not mess with. But again, this was not enough to keep me reading and was definitely not enough to bolster up a lacking plot, if in fact there were any in the book at all.

I can’t in all honesty recommend this book to any other readers, except those who are diehard fans of this Author, and I very much doubt that I will be reading anything written by them again. For the pure reasoning of not finishing the book, it now holds the dubious place of being the only one I have reviewed that I did not finish and, therefore, have not given a rating to.

A decidedly weird mishmash of mythologies, a serpentine plot and a thicket of back stories intertwine as de la Cruz sets up the continuing saga, but it all gels magnificently.

North Hampton did not exist on any map, which made locating the small, insular community on the very edge of the Atlantic coast something of a conundrum to outsides, who were known to wander in by chance only to find it impossible to return; so that the place, with its remarkably empty silver-sand beaches, rolling green fields, and imposing, rambling farmhouses, became more of a half-remembered dream than a memory.
