I knew of McBey as a collector of historical papers, but this brief book is his story from the earliest days of his life until the time he left a thankless banking job to strike out on his own as an artist. Candid, witty, and spare. Nicolas Barker's introduction and epilogue provide important context. ( ) A lovely, moving, book about the early years of the most famous Aberdonian artist, and one of the most highly regarded British painters and draughtsmen of the 1920's and 1930's. This short autobiography tells his life story from the very first years in a 1880's small, poor, puritanical village a few miles north of Aberdeen, to his life in that city for eleven years, working as a bank clerk by day and (self)studying, painting and engraving in the evenings. I was lucky enough to come across this small volume the day after I visited a retrospective exhibition of his (and his wife's) works at the Aberdeen Art Gallery. Reading it with the images of his etchings and paintings still fresh on my mind was a delight. But the book stands by itself, and the lively, witty, and elegant writing style of McBey turns the reading of this tiny little book a memorable experience. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
This book is an autobiographical account of the early years of James McBey, the self-taught boy from a humble north-east village who became one of Scotland's most successful and celebrated artists. Writing with charismatic frankness and realism, McBey describes his passionate desire to be an artist, from his first etchings (printed with the help of an old mangle) to the moment when he left a stultifying job to strike out for Holland to create a life of his own. McBey's journey was not an easy one. Poverty, ignorance, his family's indifference, the petty routines of an Aberdeen bank, his mother's suicide, all these are evoked with gravity, clarity and a lightness of touch - like the etchings themselves - which will long remain in the reader's mind. Introduced by Nicolas Barker, who edited the original manuscripts, this book offers a real-life portrait of the artist as a young man and establishes James McBey as a gifted prose stylist in his own right.
