Transformed by the Super-Soldier Serum from a 97-pound weakling into Captain America, Steve Rogers led the charge to liberate the world from the Axis powers. But before World War II's end an accident left him frozen in suspended animation and his sidekick Bucky dead. The world turned on for decades. When the Avengers finally resuscitated him, Steve Rogers was greeted by a world vastly changed. He was a man out of time tormented by the death of his partner, but no less committed to the cause of fighting evil in all its forms. As Stan Lee admits, Tales Of Suspense #59-62 featured Cap in contemporary adventures that were heavy on action but light on plot. A foray into Vietnam to take on a sumo wrestler (!) indicates that plot (or accuracy) wasn't necessarily the main objective with these tales.
Tales Of Suspense #63-71 suddenly revert to WW2 Captain America with sidekick Bucky joining in the fight against the Nazis including the nefarious Red Skull. At least one story is a recreation of Golden Age comic storytelling although the Comics Code in force by the mid 60s means it lacks the gritty violence of the 40s era.
Tales Of Suspense #72 brings the strip back to the present with the preceding issues dealt with as reminisces Cap is sharing with his fellow Avengers. The war still isn't over though as the Red Skull returns along with his swastika-bearing Nazi robots The Sleepers that have lain in wait for 20 years.
Towards the end of this run of adventures, Cap begins to take on the deeper characterisation of his contemporary Marvel Age heroes and becomes less of a 40s hero in a 60s world. (
