Like many children, Kate is very curious. She is always ready to learn more about the world around her. When she comes across Timmy, who has an intellectual disability, on the playground she asks her mom "what's wrong with Timmy?" Her mother explained his disability to her and portrayed some of their similarities.
I can see that this book had good intentions but it is a big "NO" for me. The title itself is inappropriate, if that is all someone reads, it could accidentally reinforce one to think it is alright to speak in such way. Also, I found it to be very wordy for a children's book and overall not well written. ( )

This book is about an 8 year old girl named Kate who encounters a same aged boy named Timmy. Kate notices that Timmy looks a little differently than she's used to. Kate then asks her mom "what's wrong with Timmy?" Kate mom explains that Timmy has special needs and may learn a little differently than she does. She then explains that even though Timmy has disabilities they have more in common than Kate thinks. Kate and Timmy end up becoming great friends and Kate becomes an advocate for Timmy. I had this book in my childhood home library because my mom was a special educator and saw this book to be important for her kids to read. She read it to us many times especially as we got older and could understand the message this book is conveying. I am so glad she did read this because it helped my sisters and I gain exposure to disabilities and what they may look like. I think exposure for young kids is a huge component and needs to be more mainstreamed. ( )

This book asks so many of the questions that children have when they meet someone with disabilities in such beautiful way. I appreciate how honest the questions are, although some may see them as rude, because those are the questions that are asked by children every day! In this book a little girl named Kate meets Timmy, a boy her age with many developmental delays. As she asks questions and learns from her mother and from Timmy herself she realizes that although different in some ways she and Timmy are also very much alike. The reader is then exposed to what it feels like to befriend someone with a disability and to also stand up for them with other people. It should be noted that Kate asks why God makes people different as there are many that would be offended by this. Personally I believe that the author does a wonderful job explaining in a way that is easy to for a child to understand and is also very honest. This is a great read for both children and parents alike. ( )

This is a simple book about a girl named Kate who has questions about a boy named Timmy. She doesn't understand why he acts differently and looks differently, so she asks her mom all sorts of questions. Her mother explains that Timmy is different, but that he is also a lot alike Kate. They play basketball together and Kate realizes that Timmy is fun to be around. There is mentions of God in this book, talking about God making everyone special in their own way. It's an okay book that has a good message, but some of the language used is a little iffy, and I don't like the emphasis they put on Kate being "scared" of Timmy. ( )

For my children, Katherine, Christina, Patrick, and Christopher. May you always reach out to the children who are different from you with love, compassion, and kindness. To my husband, Arnold, who shares his life and talents with those with disabilities. Thank you for caring. To my parents, Eunice and Sargent Shriver, two extraordinary individuals who have dedicated their lives to helping those with disabilities. I have seen you change the world through your determination and love. What a difference you have made to the millions of people with developmental disabilities. And, finally, to every parent of a child with special needs, may we all build new dreams together.
