This book is about the history of trains and the ending of them. The boys father worked for the train and the little boy loved riding the train and being around it. ( )

A great, nostalgic read for train lovers. This would be a fun way to start a unit on transportation, or then-versus-now. I did find it annoying that the score wasn't included in a book based on a song. This book based on a song about the fading past of the American locomotive was beautifully presented and adorned with art from the great Wendall Minor. Additionally, there are some beautiful metaphors and similes sprinkled into the text. I'm not a train fanatic or a nostalgia junkie, but this really conjured some brilliant imagery for me. Good book. This is a wonderful book that tells the story of the railway era and what progress has meant to trains. This is a beautiful book with lovely paintings to accompany each line of the song. I think this would be a good book just to read to children and have them think about earlier times. ( )
