Another great book, this one about 'politics' and international diplomacy. He pokes at all those war mongers who like to send others out to fight and die in wars for no reason other than to show how tough they are. Pratchett is an astute observer of the world around us. ( )

Not Pratchett's best, I think. Still some good bits, but I think there must have been a better way to make his point about stereotypes besides just having characters say them and then other characters point out how silly they are, over and over and over again. Sgt Colon and Nobby are also my least favorite of the Watch, and this only confirms that. On the other hand I enjoyed Vimes and Ahmed and their interactions, and also the Dis-Organiser (my favorite part of the book was the ongoing joke/terrifying implications of Vimes' alternate universe appointments). Not one of the best Discworld instalments, but still a great addition to the series.

I think, however, this one may have actually grabbed my attention simply because it was the very next audio book I dived into right after the excellent and very scary [b:Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield|15814204|Dirty Wars The World is a Battlefield|Jeremy Scahill|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1397271077l/15814204._SY75_.jpg|21540580]. So after reading about the subversive and psychotic wars waged by America and her enemies, I dive right into a burgeoning war on Discworld.

Oh, if only America had the cooler heads that inhabit Discworld.

Regardless, I was entertained, and I chuckled many times throughout this story, and honestly, that's all I can truly ask for from this series. ( )

Always be wary of any helpful item that weighs less than its operating manual.

Such is modern life.

A small island pops up out of the ocean between Ankh-Morpork and Klatch, one thing leads to another, and suddenly... war.

The entire book is a discussion of politics / war / and especially racism. So far as it goes, it's well done and raises a lot of interesting points. In particular:

The intelligence of that creature known as a crowd is the square root of the number of people in it.

The wisdom of crowds tends to be anything but. Particularly when dealing with Them.

“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Unfortunately, Jingo is the weakest of the City Watch books thus far and a decent bit down Discworld overall. Nothing in particular is outright bad, it just didn't grab me. So it goes.

I enjoyed this more than I had expected to, after more than twenty years since I first read it. Twenty-first in the Discworld series, and the fourth novel about the Watch, led by Sam Vimes. Characterisation improves as the series advances, and I thoroughly enjoyed the various interchanges between the diverse Watch members in this book.

The plot is a bit complex, involving politics and war, with an emphasis on diplomacy and pacifism where possible - very cleverly done, although I found the story as such quite confusing at times. Pratchett was a master at seeing through masks and understanding human nature, poking fun at our customs and idiosyncrasies, and peppering his writing with literary and other references.

Recommended, but it's best to have read the earlier 'Watch' books as the cast list is quite large and it would be even more confusing if someone picked this up as a first Discworld book.
