IT'S THE DISCWORLD'S LAST CONTINENT AND IT'S GOING TO DIE IN A FEW DAYS, EXCEPT... Who is this hero striding across the red desert? Sheep shearer, beer drinker, bush ranger, and someone who'll even eat a Meat Pie Floater when he's sober. A man in a hat whose luggage follows him on little legs. Yes, it's Rincewind, the inept wizard who can't even spell wizard. He's the only hero left. Still...no worries, eh?…

Much as I would like to love this, being a Discworld parody of my beloved country, I don't. There are lots of funny sections, and many many entertaining cultural references, but so much of the story falls flat. Or has not aged well. The references to racism, the really quite terrifying carnival that I presume was meant to be the Sydney Mardi Gras, the really poorly written (and almost non-existent) female characters, all had me wincing away from the page.

This is a re-read, roughly two decades after the first read. Very little of the story had stuck with me, although some of the narrative structure was obvious -- but this is Discworld, and the question is usually not 'where will the story end' but 'by what devious route will we get there'. I do wish past me had written down some thoughts, because it would be interesting to see where the changes in thought are.

Unless you are a specific fan of Rincewind, or a completist reader of the Discworld novels, give this one a miss. ( )

I've never liked Rincewind. He's got all the likability of a sea mine, and about as much directionless destructive ability. This is the point, I suppose, and while I don't necessarily need a likable lead to like a novel (certain Malazan books come to mind), there's a detestability about Rincewind that makes me want to obsessively wash my hands.

The wizards of Unseen University occupy a similar space in my brain, with the possible exception of Ponder Stibbons and the Bursar (but only by comparison to the other wizards).

"But was it funny?" I hear people ask in some dark corner of my brain desperate to anticipate the questions of others and answer them preemptively. Well, yes, it's still Pratchett, even if it's weakened by the wizzards. But it's popcorn-movie funny, in a way I won't remember two months from now. With the possible exception of the Mad Max bit, which was oddly fitting given that Fury Road comes out today.

22nd in the Discworld series, although it really follows from 'Interesting Times', as it's a book featuring the wizards. Rincewind is struggling for survival on XXXX (loosely based on Australia) and the other wizards travel in both time and space to try to find him. They want the Librarian's name, and Rincewind is the only person likely to know it.

While all the Discworld books can stand alone, this one is best read after at least a few of the earlier ones. There's lots of satire, plenty of banter between the wizards, and some excellent new characters; I was particularly amused by the God of Evolution.

Not to everyone's taste - the author pokes fun at many Australian cultures, speech habits and animals - but definitely recommended to anyone who likes the sometimes farcical satire on human nature that the Discworld books provide.

There's nothing more dangerous than a god with too much time on its hands.

What a brilliant statement. Honestly, Pratchett continues to wow me with this series. I came for the funny, but I'm staying for the intelligence.

Though, to be fair, the funny is still amazing. Witness several high muck-a-mucks from the Unseen Academy attempting to explain sex to a clueless god. Hilarious.

But it's the seemingly casually tossed-off observations that spur comments that, while also meant to be funny, are also deeply intelligent observations.

Absolutely love this series. ( )

Suffice it to say that while this may not be Pratchett's best Discworld novel, it's still an enjoyable one. What, one wonders, will he tackle next? Among other things, he's spoofed religion (Small Gods), feminism (Equal Rites), Hollywood (Moving Pictures), death (in an entire series of books), opera (Maskerade), racism (Jingo), Christmas (Hogfather), ancient Egypt (Pyramids), and most of the hoary, shop-worn devices of fantasy. Still, no worries; there are plenty of themes left.

People don't live on the Disc any more than, in less hand-crafted parts of the multiverse, they live on balls. Oh, planets may be the place where their body eats its tea, but they live elsewhere, in worlds of their own which orbit very handily around the centre of their heads.
All tribal myths are true, for a given value of 'true'.
