I'm a bit of a science geek and slightly obsessive about proper scientific terminology, and so I taught my children the fact that the term BUGS properly refers to the order Hemiptera. My daughter is now grown and even more annoyed than I by the fact that this book refers to not only the entire class Insecta but also class Arachnida and class Diplopoda as BUGS. Multiple times on every page. Not just the title. It diminishes the educational value of the book. She chose not to read this book to her children. Too bad - the illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the verse would not be less catchy for using the proper terms to refer to the insects occasionally. This is a great example of an informational book in that it provides a lot of facts about bugs in a way that entertains as it has a rhyming scheme. It gives information about the different characteristics of bugs such as the way they look on the outside and ways they ward off predators. It then goes into similar characteristics that almost all bugs share such as the fact that they don't have ears and that they hatch from eggs. It is a good informational book loaded with facts about all kinds of bugs and it even includes an extra poem in the back that can be useful as an overview of the book to give bug facts.
