I was really worried about it when I first began reading it. It had some odd stylistic issues and I was having trouble getting situated in the time frame and the settings. But, once I got past that, and further into the book, it was really a fantastic read.

Have you ever read a book where you read a section and think, "Wow, fantastic ending" and then realize that the book continues on for another 150 pages? In my experience, when this happens in a book, the last 150 pages are a disappointment, and often ruin my enjoyment of the book as a whole. Well, I definitely had that feeling with this novel--there were a couple of different climaxes that I thought would be a great end for the book...but thankfully, as I continued to read, the book never let me down, and by the end, I am glad that the book ended as it did. As Scandinavia becomes the home of the next bestseller, these Swedish authors make their mark in the growing market. One, a former, award-winning journalist the other, an ex-con put their heads together to write a grim look into the life of the rat—a criminal under the pay of the police to become turncoat against others in the underbelly of society.
Piet Hoffman is one such informant. Recruited the day he left jail after a petty crime and now finds himself in deep-cover with the Polish mafia. When he agrees to go back in jail to take over the heroin sales and to eliminate the opposition, life takes a turn for the worse. Initially having to lie to his family was bad, but when his cover is blown within the first week by the very cops who stood by and promised to protect him, Hoffman finds himself on the run within the confines of the walls he is incarcerated behind.
He takes hostages and sets himself up for an unusual escape in order to confront his betrayers. Homicide detective Ewert Grens—a bull-dog of a cop who hangs onto to the crimes he investigates and worries them to death—is investigating a murder Hoffman witnessed prior to going undercover. Grens digs up clues that lead him to Hoffman and to the truth behind the betrayals, but will he turn against the police force to help rescue the life of an undercover con?
Hoffman, to his credit, is a very careful man. He has planned for every eventuality so when all starts to go wrong his plan is in place and his three-second window of opportunity—from the book’s title—is amply played out. Of course, he did not share those plans with you, my dear reader and so you are left to assume and wonder until the very last play is made.
This ranks up there with the ultimate police procedurals and thrillers and is an absolute page-turner.

Three Seconds is a Swedish crime thriller where an ex-con, Piet Hoffman, has been working deep undercover for the Swedish police infiltrating the Polish Mafia operating in Sweden. He is involved in the drug dealing business and gets his break when he is being told to take over the drug distribution in the Swedish jail system. His handler proposes that they go along with this plan, but things get complicated when a Danish infiltrator is killed during a drug delivery, and the murder is being swept under the rug to go through with the plan. High ranking members of the Swedish police go along with this deal only to turn on him quickly.

This novel was disappointing in many ways. First, the concept of distributing drugs inside of a prison seems hardly worth the effort. The logistics of smuggling in the drugs and selling to people who don't have currency on hand just doesn't make a whole lot of sense and not worth the risk. Second, the book is very slow in spots. There's too much wasted space, and it seems as if the authors are trying to prolong the story to hit a certain word count. Third, the way the police turn on Hoffman so quickly is just silly. On the threat that he might speak to the investigator about the murder, they sentence him to death at the snap of the finger. It wasn't believable and it felt rushed. Overall, I would advise skipping this one.

“Three Seconds” spent the better part of a year on Swedish best-seller lists. Its authors won a prize — the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers’ Award for Swedish Crime Novel of the Year — that has also been awarded to Larsson and Henning Mankell. They know how to deliver the kind of stilted, world-weary verbosity that somehow quickens the pulses of this genre’s readers. Even better, they are on a first-name basis with the Seven Dwarfs of Scandinavian Noir: Guilty, Moody, Broody, Mopey, Kinky, Dreary and Anything-but-Bashful.

Nils Schwartz: Anders Roslunds och Börge Hellströms nya roman Tre sekunder är deras bästa och ställer de flesta internationella konkurrenter i skuggan.

As intriguing as it sounds, Roslund and Hellström dole out the drama in scenes that suffer from too much information, erratic intercutting and a heavy-handed style that not even an able translator like Kari Dickson can smooth over. Also problematic is the unsympathetic portrait of a character appearing in the authors' four previous novels, Det. Ewert Grens. Grens is gruff to the point of hostility and haunted by guilt about his wife Anni, a fellow police officer injured on the job who recently died after 29 years in a nursing home. Grens has been in a funk over Anni for years, reduced to sleeping on the floor in his office and grieving in a manner that would make any astute supervisor send him to a departmental shrink. Even when Grens is roused to action by the murder of the undercover Danish cop, his bitterness combined with the minute details of the investigation makes reading the novel's first part a dreary affair.
