“Once upon a time, a little girl was raised by monsters.
But angels burned the doorways to their world, and she was all alone.”

As always my reviews are based off of my true and honest opinion and I do my best to keep all reviews spoiler free.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is the first book of a trilogy. Its about Karou, a girl with monsters for family and tattoos on her hands, and Akiva, an angel with a sad past. They meet, they fight, but something draws them to each other. Soon Karou's world changes, she finds herself cut off from those that she has always known, and loved. She sets out to find a way back to them, and finds out more about herself then she ever could have thought possible, and she learns of her own, and Akiva's past.
This book was amazing. It had me from the first chapter, and just got better and better with every page. What started out a good book, turned into an AMAZING book. I'm loving everything about it. It made me smile and blush and it made me cry. Yes, it made me cry and cry more than once. I was an emotion wreck throughout this book.

It keeps you guessing but explains everything before the books end. Leaving you feeling like you went for an amazing ride and finished with satisified but very emotional feeling at the end. If I had to sum up this book in one word it would be WOW!!!!

Inside cover: "From master storyteller and National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor comes a sweeping and grogeously written modern fantasy about a forbidden love, an ancient and epic battle, and hope for a world remade." I was waffling about a four or five, but the message of hope in this book carried the day.

Lonely Karou is a human girl, attending university in Prague, studying art; however, she is drawn away by the four chimera, who raised her, to run errands for her foster father, Brimstone. She travels through portals to far away cites and is rewarded with small wishes (scuppies.) During one of those travels she is met by an angel (Aviva), who tries to destroy her as an archenemy, but cannot do so. As the story progresses, the reason becomes quite clear: he loves her. Unfortunately, Karou is determined to find her family, and Aviva and his half siblings have sealed all the portals with fire. Aviva eventually figures out that Karou is the reincarnation of someone very dear to him. Good ending, well written, lovely descriptions of Prague (you will want to go see for yourself.) I especially liked Taylor's ability to hang the end of a chapter so you started the next one to see the resolution. ( )

teen fiction; angel/demon romance. Towards the middle/latter third it gets a little tedious (this story is taking too long to tell!) but it turns out there's a bit more to it than you think, and by the end you're ready to read the next installment. ( )

Karou is different from most 17-year-olds. Her hair grows blue naturally, she has mysterious tattoos all over her body, and she has command of over 20 languages. She also collects human and animal teeth from around the world for her family, an assortment of chimera. She leads a lonely life as an art student in Prague, unable to connect to even her closest friend, in attempts to keep her family and "quirks" a secret. Karou isn't even sure of who she is, but she does her best to serve her family and maintain a life under the radar. One day she meets a winged man on an errand to collect teeth, a man she recognizes as an enemy but one to whom she is incredibly attracted, and life quickly spins out of control. In order to protect her family, she must learn the truth behind who they are, who she is, and the implications of her attraction to an angel.

This has been recommended all over the place this year, so I knew I needed to check it out. I must admit I am highly--HIGHLY--skeptical about a book involving angels, but this turned out to be nothing of what I expected. In this, I loved the treatment of identity throughout the whole book. Everyone thinks they know who the "good guys" and the "bad guys" are, but it becomes clear rather quickly how subjective it all is. The angels were essentially just another being like the chimera, not really attached to any sort of specific religion. They did resemble the Judeo-Christian depiction of angels and behaved in the Miltonian war-like fashion, but Laini Taylor made a point to clarify that religion was more primal and unknown than any person (or creature) could assume. Taylor also does a superb job at describing the places Karou travels. The descriptions of Prague are simply stunning, and it made me want to go there even more. The characters are equally as vivid and thoroughly entertaining. I loved the villains as much as the heroes (and, as I stated before, these lines were often blurred). It was intriguing to get to know them and learn more about the "Elsewhere" they've been fighting for for so long.

I did have a few issues with the novel, however. One issue lies with its style that has been acclaimed by most reviews I've read so far. Taylor uses a barrage of unusual words throughout the novel. At first it was refreshing, but after a while I felt like I was studying for the GRE. It just seemed a little too self-aware and flowery for my tastes, which is odd because I dream of having unlimited access to the Oxford English Dictionary. I also kind of got annoyed with the descriptions of how the beauty of certain characters was supposed to be so overwhelming...I caught myself rolling my eyes on more than one occasion. You might have even once caught me wincing and muttering, "Gag me." I found some of the scenes a bit too drawn out and some of the foreshadowing redundant and heavy-handed (that major flashback at the end just about killed me). This tendency, though, didn't detract too much from the overall plot, but it has made me a little wary of continuing on with the series (oh yes, this is the first of a series).

I've wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this. I'm leaning toward the 4th because it definitely had thrilling parts that made it unbearable to put down at times, and some of the characters were just so much fun (I missed Karou when she wasn't the focus, and I couldn't get enough of Zuzana). I'll definitely give the next book a try, but if it doesn't quite capture my attention, I'll be fine with this first endeavor by itself.

********
Reread ~6 years later: I am so overdue for reading the third and final book, but it has been so long, I knew I needed to reread the series all over again. Verdict? The language, while flowery, didn't get to me *as* much though sometimes it was ridiculous. I also realized I love these books for the world building and grimy, violent magic. The love story is totally ridiculous, and I found myself skimming those parts. It is an easy, breezy vacation read, which is good cuz that's what I'm on right now. ( )

I loved the writing style. I loved her word choice, they were complicated and eloquent. I expanded my vocabulary while reading this book for sure!

In the short:
But, I had no or little love of the characters. The plot felt like it was trying to be a dark, exotic version of a Cassandra Clare book with an unsuccessful addition of Romeo and Juliet. The first half was just had me gone with the relationships and secrecy and romance. I was over it. Then Laini Taylor dropped most of the characters including the only felt I felt a little bit for, completely alienating me from the book.

In the long:
In specifics, the "we used to date" between Kaz and Karou was unnecessary and created eye-rolling, not needed tension. The book could have survived without it. Then the angel was introduced, creating the Romeo and Juliet and failed Cassandra Clare feels. As a fan of the play and the Shadowhunter World, I was not impressed. During this part we weren't given much magic, just a girl trying to normal despite her subnormal upbringing. She had friends wither personality who were some of the charms to the story. It wasn't bad. Then everything I had just read about (except the love interest of course) was thrown out the window as we entered the Elsewhere and the magical side of the world with wars and humanoids and all the cool fantasy/action/politics you could wish for. After that I didn't care for anyone. Everything past that point was confusing and frustrating. It was what I was hoping for going in, but I had gotten comfortable in our world and was not pleased being abruptly taken away from it.

I'm not turned off of Laini Taylor though, I just not a Daughter of Shadow and Bone fan. I think I'll read [b:Strange the Dreamer|28449207|Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1)|Laini Taylor|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1491249148s/28449207.jpg|48158509] one day if I ever see it at my library. Humanity, perhaps, that quality of benevolence that humans have, without irony, named after themselves.
She tastes like nectar and salt. Nectar and salt and apples. Pollen and stars and hinges. She tastes like fairy tales. Swan maidens at midnight. Cream on the tip of a fox's tongue. She tastes like hope.
Wishes are false. Hope is true. Hope makes it own magic.
If it's not chocolate, it's not breakfast.
Evanescence was not, in itself, a grim fate. It was the way of things, to be unmade; it happened in natural death, every day.
