In March of 1943, Scott Chantler's grandfather, Law Chantler, shipped out across the Atlantic for active service with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, along with his best friend, Jack a fellow officer. Excellent drawing and heartfelt story from grand child of World War II soldier.

Good use of color — all the fighting is in red everything else is sepia.

Grunt’s eye view of post-Normandy battle for an already flattened French town of Buron. ( )

I'm not one to cry while reading, especially a graphic novel. But Scott Chandler has done such a fantastic job here...the way he tells this story...in a non-linear way that isn't gimmicky, but is exactly what you need to understand what's going on in these people's lives, and in the lives of their grandchildren looking back...I don't want to say anything more. It's very touching, and interesting, and well drawn and even funny. And yeah, totally made me cry a little.
Wow, such a good graphic novel. AND CANADIAN! ( )

Skillfully drawn work. A nice tribute to a grandfather and a very good first person account of the war. ( )

Scott Chantler's grandfather, Reginald Law Chantler (known by his middle name, Law), served with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada in the Second World War along with his best friend, Jack Chrysler. Their story is told here in the form of a beautifully illustrated graphic memoir. From Law's childhood and adulthood in southwestern Ontario, we're taken to England, where the Elgin Regiment is trained up to be part of the invasion force in 1944. The drawings are excellent at capturing the joshing around of the soldiers, the moments when time stands still in the horror of battle, and the fleeting glimpses of beauty and calm. It's very well done and definitely worth reading if you like stories about the individuals behind important historical battles. ( )
