"Firefighter paramedic Mallory 'Ice' James commands a crew of smokejumpers -- twenty women and men who eat together, sleep together, and parachute into the face of raging forest fires together -- and she has thirty days to whip the rookies into shape. Discipline and teamwork mean the difference between life and death on the line, and she's earned her reputation as cool and controlled in the face of danger. Mallory isn't happy when 'Hot Shot' Jac Russo shows up unannounced for boot camp along with a reputation for being trouble. Jac is none too pleased about her cold reception, even if the new boss is drop-dead gorgeous and hotter than the blazes they're supposed to be dousing. Mallory and Jac may not like each other much, but lust isn't something either can control -- and they soon discover ice burns as fiercely as flame"--P. [4] of cover. It's another in the First Responders series, and this time it's the story of Mallory and Jac. Mallory is the commander of a crew of smokejumpers (I'm still not totally sure what the difference between them and some of the other wildfire fighters are, but, I digress). Jac is a rookie who gets placed in Mallory's rookie class, but, Mallory didn't choose her, so, right off the bat there's tension. There's also tension because right away the two women have chemistry also.
So, there's lots of back and forth. (Some of which I liked and some parts of it I didn't, which would be the down parts of the story).
There aren't really any big subplots (Emily... Sarah... so much there, argh), but, there were sub strings of the main plot that were sort of interesting. I know that this was written pre-2016, but, going through my head on occasion was 'Trump' over and over. (And that is on my, not on the author).
I mostly liked the ending, although I thought it was a tiny bit too perfect. On the other hand, it's a lesbian fiction romance, 99% of the time they're very Happily Ever After at the end.
Oh, and one part I really loved was the firefighting stuff. Those who fight wildfires especially are a different breed and that definitely came through in the text. ( )
