Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he'll face is a paper cut. But Peter's prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter's ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.… (més)

The Big Over Easy de Jasper Fforde (souloftherose)
souloftherose: It's difficult to explain this recommendation without giving spoilers to one or other of the books. There were certain plot elements to Rivers of London/Midnight Riots which made me think of The Big Over Easy. And both books have a well-developed sense of humour.… (més)

Rule 34 de Charles Stross (fhprice)
fhprice: Besides the urban setting and police procedural genre similarities, both have protagonists with a snarky "we're just cogs making witty observations about the machine" voices. Wicked humor.

andreas.wpv: Different type of protagonist and friends, but dealing with the un- or supernatural, solving crimes and preventing disasters. This is very similar though in style and tone, mood of the story. It is tense, yes, but holds no horror or exceeding brutality. The protagonist is human, and like a human, and the story has an undercurrent of kindness that many novels miss. And it is funny at times, from gentle humor to laugh out loud.… (més)

Peter Grant, a young PC, gets involved in a case where a ghost tells him what he witnessed. This leads him into becoming a wizard's apprentice within the Metropolitan police, making the acquaintance of water spirits associated with the Thames and solving a crime. A nice mix of contemporay London and magic and a curiosity about what magic is. ( )

Peter Grant is an officer in the London Metropolitan Police who, after he meets a ghost in the line of duty, is drafted into a branch of the Met that handles cases involving magic and the supernatural. I am already a fan of the genre and a big Dresden-fan, so as soon as I was alerted to this series, I put it on the wishlist. Now that I've read the first installment, I know that this series will go to the top of my "favorites" list; the locale is credible, the characters engaging and entertaining, and the writing is clever and funny without seeming like the writer is in love with his own style and witticisms. It sometimes made me think of Doctor Who and when I found out that Aaronovitch has indeed written for that show, I was not surprised. Very thankful to my fellow LT:er Dave (AHS
-Wolfy) who put it on my radar in the first place. ( )

THE NARRATOR IS EXCELLENT!

Now that is out of the way let's talk about this story. Which I find very difficult to rate. Because I liked the humor. But not everything. I liked the story but also got bored. I liked the main character but he also irritated me to no end. (Especially when he describes women. I can enjoy the odd butt here and there but when I'm working, I don't. Also it's very boring to read only about the 'sexy' female bodies. DUDE MALES ARE SEXY TOO!) I liked knowing how the police does things but the pacing felt very slow.

I don't know. And it's weird for me to be this conflicted about a book/story. Not when it is a fantasy. I don't know if I will continue this series. Maybe in the future and on paper (THAT NARRATOR THOUGH!) I would get more into the story. ( )

This was another nice start to a new series of books that I'm going to read the rest of when I get my hands on them. It's got magic, wizards, crime, it's set in London, what more can you ask for? Maybe a less rushed conclusion. The character of Molly did not really make a lot of sense to me, and ended up being a bit of a deus ex machina? ( )

Yet ah! why should they know their fate?

Since sorrow never comes too late,

And happiness too swiftly flies.

Thought would destroy their paradise.

No more; where ignorance is bliss,

'Tis folly to be wise.
