The Big Over Easy de Jasper Fforde (souloftherose)
souloftherose: It's difficult to explain this recommendation without giving spoilers to one or other of the books. There were certain plot elements to Rivers of London/Midnight Riots which made me think of The Big Over Easy. And both books have a well-developed sense of humour.… (més)

Rule 34 de Charles Stross (fhprice)
fhprice: Besides the urban setting and police procedural genre similarities, both have protagonists with a snarky "we're just cogs making witty observations about the machine" voices. Wicked humor.

Strange Practice de Vivian Shaw (andreas.wpv)
andreas.wpv: Different type of protagonist and friends, but dealing with the un- or supernatural, solving crimes and preventing disasters. This is very similar though in style and tone, mood of the story. It is tense, yes, but holds no horror or exceeding brutality. The protagonist is human, and like a human, and the story has an undercurrent of kindness that many novels miss. And it is funny at times, from gentle humor to laugh out loud.… (més)

Unique, fun, and a bit creepy! I enjoyed this ghosty fantasy story all the way to the end despite its MC's penchant for detailing where he is, where things are, and various histories of London. It all means something, you see, and Peter Grant's dry humor makes it entertaining.

Bonus points for many people of color, including Peter Grant himself, and for the author telling me which characters were white when I'd rather not assume it.

If you want to feel like you visited London with a fun guide and experienced a few rather dangerous ghosts while you were at it, this book is for you. ( )

The audiobook production was fantastic. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was amazing. He not only captured Peter Grant's internal voice, he magnificently portrayed the varied cast of characters. He was so brilliant I'm not sure I can't not listen to the rest of the series in audiobook.

The premise of this book, a police officer who learns about the supernatural and joins the secret branch of the police that deals with all things magic, etc. (of which, including him, there are two individuals) is intriguing. But the execution is where the book shines. For one, it's funny, and that's no mean feat. Peter is snarky as hell and I love it.

And the plot has a couple different threads that both give the reader a crash course in this world Aaronovitch has created, while moving things along at a nice clip.

Now, on to the problematic aspects. For one, this book more or less fails the Bechdel test, which is kind of appalling considering there are a number of strong female characters (though to be fair, one of those characters doesn't speak).

Also, Peter Grant's internal narrative was very much a horny guy. I could have done with a bit less musings on how he was attracted to Lesley or Beverly, or observations on women's bustlines or cleavages.

Usually, that would have annoyed me much more than it did. I can't decide if it was the excellent narration or the fact that the characterization of Peter was good enough that I didn't feel it detracted from him. ( )

Let me be clear - I am not a fan of fantasy or anything supernatural, especially when it's mixed with reality. But this world won me over, a semi-secret magic corps to the police helping save Londoners from criminals using supernatural advantages. Peter, the policeman who discovers untapped magical connections in himself, helps solve the crime with his less-talented colleague and help from wise man Nightingale. A fun read, especially if you know the city. Excellent writing! ( )

I stumbled across this book in twitter maybe a few months ago. Then I found it in a second-hand store and bought it, and to my surprise it's already ten years old!

It is urban fantasy set in London. I don't like London, I don't like british english - and this book has both in abundance. So many confusing and irrelevant place names, as well as british weird shit.

Also the author's building up a series, it's noticeable in the somewhat jumpy scenes that try to introduce many, maybe too many characters and urban fantasy elements.

It still works quite well and it's an easy read, the action and the pacing are very good. ( )

Yet ah! why should they know their fate?

Since sorrow never comes too late,

And happiness too swiftly flies.

Thought would destroy their paradise.

No more; where ignorance is bliss,

'Tis folly to be wise.
