This is the only long piece of internet fan-fiction that I’ve ever read. I sort-of liked it? I was drawn along enough to finish it, but my overall feelings are ambivalent. The author leans heavily on the readers’ familiarity with and understanding of the characters established in the original material, but in many cases he changes the characters in significant ways without sufficiently justifying those changes. Mostly what I didn’t like was the choice to tell a dark, gritty, morally ambivalent story by twisting up a perfectly nice children’s book. ( )

This is both an excellent piece of fan-fiction as well as a wonderful treatise on The Methods Of Rationality. Eliezer Yudkowsky is simply brilliant, funny and eloquent. ( )

I started reading this book very quickly and for a bit I couldn't put it down. I slowed down a bit in parts in the middle, but quickly finished the last several chapters. I appreciate and enjoy reading about critical thinking and logic, which this book is full of. Also, the alternative story line of Harry Potter is so great. The writing is very fluid and enjoyable to me - I am interested to see original fiction by the author (not that this isn't original, but I mean his own story). That said, this story stands on its own in my mind (due to the popularity of Harry Potter, it will almost never be read without comparison to the original work).

I recommend this if you like mystery, detective work, and logic. ( )

I don't know that I could even begin to do this huge piece of work justice in a review. It is filled with geeky references that resonate with me, it is inspiring of good habits in readers, it is quite intelligently plotted, its characters make me care rather significantly about them, it takes the hard way out on a lot of issues because the hard way out is the right way to handle them, and it does a far better job of avoiding trite tropes than almost anything else I've read. It is deeply engaging, and I learned from it (as, apparently, did the author). I feel my life has been enriched by reading it.

It is an amazing read. I was, quite literally, amazed at times, thus it very clearly deserves no less than a full five stars which (at the time of this writing) gives me a "tooltip" of "it was amazing" when I hover over it with my mouse cursor on Goodreads.

If you don't like it when a work of fiction challenges you to examine why you really believe what you believe -- and not just accept your comfortable internal self-justifications -- then perhaps you should avoid this book. On the other hand, if you let it challenge you to do that despite disliking it, you then might be the person who should be most moved to read it.

I was initially skeptical that I should read it, for a number of reasons:

1. It's described by the author as fanfic.

2. It's based on Harry Potter. I do not much like the two HP books by Rowling that I've read.

3. It was not a complete work at the time I started reading it, and it was taking long enough for the author to finish that I knew I'd have to stop and wait for him several times before it was done.

4. There are probably other reasons that do not come to mind, now; it was years ago that I was initially skeptical about whether I should read it.

I'm glad I gave it a chance, anyway. It's really quite excellent. Really. ( )
