"And it came to pass that Zolobion the Magician and Ganelon Silvermane set forth from the land of the great Stone Face and took the first steps of their gigantic journey across the world, a journey so long and fearful and so filled with wonders that no man since time began until that hour had undertaken a like adventure.
"But their mission was a logical impossibility. Hence what purpose is undertaking it?
"Only that the moon was falling."
Written as a standalone novel in 1969, "Giant Of World's End' actually tells the end of Carter's Gondwane epic, the subsequent 'Gondwane' series of 5 books published in the 70s being a prequel to this, the story of Ganelon Silvermane, an android living at the time of the Falling Moon.
Derivative of Jack Vance's 'Dying Earth' down to the humourous style, it's darker than many of Carter's books as the hero is more of a tragic figure than is usual for LVC. ( )
