In the far future, Earth's rotation has been halted by powerful aliens searching for the end of the universe. Happening upon Earth, the aliens took from it what they needed and moved on. After the raiders left and stopped the earth's rotation, human society fragmented and there became two very distinct populations - those who lived in the light and those who lived in the twilight. The society of the light was enlightened, progressive - a utopia. The society in the twilight was isolated and tended toward incest and the resulting madness. Clovis Becker was a son of the twilight - but one that escaped and became the foremost citizen of the sunlight lands. When it was determined that the loss of rotation had sterilized the population of the light and that incest had sterilized the population of the twilight and general malaise and madness struck that once enlightened society. Anarchy and totalitarianism resulted. Fear reigned. And Becker sought the devil with a bargain in mind.
I enjoyed this book. The image of life on a mostly uninhabited planet in the company of a beautiful woman is very enticing. Orlando Sharvis makes a most excellent Devil. As a reader, you can see the Twilight Zone ending coming, but it's difficult to put the book down. It's very much as though you're reading a car wreck about to happen and you've got to find out how it ends up. Unfortunately, we don't get enough of an epilogue to find out how it all really ends up, but it seems safe to say that Clovis returns to his roots and has a hand in repopulating the human race. ( )
