This book on the history of Australian women in sport includes some small but valuable references to women playing Australian Rules football in the 1940s (p. 210), and the 1960s and 1980s (p. 255). There is also a very brief reference to women forming football teams in Melbourne and Perth in the 1890s, but no details are given or evidence cited.
