Marvelously well written, expertly executed, and absolutely beautiful. My heart soared and shattered and soared again as the story unfolded before me. I dont know what more to say, other than this: read it!!! The story starts with a young boy who goes by the name of Patroclus. Well technically, it starts with when he swears to fight with anyone who dares lay a hand on Helena, the most beautiful woman in all of the world and then goes on to almost kill his bully (power to Patroclus!!!). His father Menoeitus decided to exile him to the country of Phthia to live under the guidance of the king of the Myrmidons, Peleus and his son Achilles. When Patroclus arrives at Phthia, he discovers that Achilles is a young, head-strong and proud boy, destined for greatness should he want it. But as time progresses and he seems to spend more time with his new companion, Patroclus finds that Achilles is anything but a mere boy. He has no interest in the women like all the other boys. Achilles seemed to only have eyes for him. And naturally, they fall in love at the age of only 13. Thetis, the sea nymph and mother of Achilles who is anything but warm tells Patroclus that Achilles will only be great if he leaves Patroclus behind which Achilles refuses to do. The news arrives that Paris, the prince of Troy, son of king Priam has stolen Helena from Menelaus’ bedchambers which will now lead to a war while Achilles, along with Patroclus are on the great mountain with Chiron to learn all of the things he needs to be a great warrior. They both are only beginning to learn everything about each other when Peleus sends for his son so as to fight in the war. To avoid fighting in the war, Achilles decides to hide out in the court of King Lycomedes as a dancer in the harem while Thetis forces Patroclus to stay back in Phthia. When he does arrive at Lycomedes’ court, he finds that his daughter, Deidameia who had fallen deeply in love with Achilles and was pregnant with his child at the time of his and Odysseus’s arrival. Odysseus then forces Achilles and Patroclus to go to the war which Achilles reluctantly agrees to. During the course of 10 years, Patroclus and Achilles’ love for each other only seems to grow but alas, it would not be enough. Patroclus goes onto be killed on the battlefield by Hector, the oldest son of king Priam. Enraged, Achilles kills Hector in retribution even though he was warned not to do so as it would lead to his death. But for these two, death would not be then end. Their love would continue to be even when they’ve gone. This book is honestly the best. It’s one of my favourite romance books because the character development in the protagonists are amazing. The chemistry between both of them is earth-shattering and they’re just one couple that you have to ship which I loved. This is definitely a shelf-keeper and a must read.
That The Song of Achilles offers a different take on the epic story of Achilles and the Trojan War is not, in itself, anything particularly out of the ordinary. People have been putting their own spins on The Iliad from the instant Homer finished reciting it. What's startling about this sharply written, cleverly re-imagined, enormously promising debut novel from Madeline Miller is how fresh and moving her take on the tale is — how she has managed to bring Achilles and his companion Patroclus to life in our time without removing them from their own. But in the case of Miller, who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in classics at Brown, the epic reach exceeds her technical grasp. The result is a book that has the head of a young adult novel, the body of the “Iliad” and the hindquarters of Barbara Cartland. Pertany a aquestes col·leccions editorials
Patroclus, an awkward young prince, follows Achilles into war, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they have learned, everything they hold dear. And that, before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate. Set during the Trojan War. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
