I have made it to Chapter 8, but I feel thoroughly detached. I'm exhausted.
I just... can't.

And I really hoped to at least read it to the end... No such luck, alas.

So I flipped to the very end and it made me all sorts of achy - but no less thoroughly detached. Which, honestly, I'm not surprised. I think it's "trying to imitate the ancient style while speaking in first person" thing. It just does not work for me. ( )

Greek mythology & gay romance trope - very exciting to read.
I loved how the book makes on thing clear: love is never easy, but oftentimes that’s the price one is willing to pay.
Additionally the focus on the rape Society back then made me think and cry a lot - very good book! ( )

This book is just pain. Nothing but pain. But even saying that this book easily is now one of my favorites. It made me feel so many emotions. I cried so hard when reading the ending. Miller is easily one of my favorite authors, I will not hesitate to read any of her future books. Also reading this while listening to it is simply the best way to do it. It took the reading experience to a whole different level. I knew that this story was going to destroy me, but I never expected this to be how I felt. I highly recommend this for everyone with my full chest. I love this book and their story, and I will never forget them. ( )

A retelling of Achilles’ life as told by his best friend and lover, Patroclus.

I honestly don’t know what more I can say about this book that hasn’t already been said. It’s beautifully written and emotionally driven, and I loved reading it! ( )

Recensione sul blog: http://thereadingpal.blogspot.it/2018/04/recensione-175-song-of-achilles.html

In the huge hall, his
beauty shone like a flame, vital and bright, drawing my eye
against my will.

His dusty feet scruffed against the flagstones as he ate. They
were not cracked and calloused as mine were, but pink and sweetly
brown beneath the dirt.

I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind,
by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth.
I would know him in death, at the end of the world.

That The Song of Achilles offers a different take on the epic story of Achilles and the Trojan War is not, in itself, anything particularly out of the ordinary. People have been putting their own spins on The Iliad from the instant Homer finished reciting it. What's startling about this sharply written, cleverly re-imagined, enormously promising debut novel from Madeline Miller is how fresh and moving her take on the tale is — how she has managed to bring Achilles and his companion Patroclus to life in our time without removing them from their own.

But in the case of Miller, who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in classics at Brown, the epic reach exceeds her technical grasp. The result is a book that has the head of a young adult novel, the body of the “Iliad” and the hindquarters of Barbara Cartland.
