Even Terry Pratchett's worst books are still well worth reading. Snuff was pretty good: another in the "non-human races are people, too" category, as well as "Sam Vimes has secret demons and is a good man only by virtue of his channeling his scary parts into his work." Not his best, but far from his worst. ( )

DNF @ 24% - Just not feeling this one. Sybil's great but Sam is not my favorite character by a long shot, and it's just taking way too long for the actual story to begin. The sarcasm and irony is on overload too, but doesn't really have a point.

What a way to round out an excellent series. I think the plot of this one felt a little more convoluted than any previous of the Watch books--I periodically went "oh is this the end?" and then no, it was not, but I think it's also Vimes at his most competent, and it was nice to not have the "Sir Terry's Patented Benign Racism" in such a huge role as it has been in other books where we incorporate other species into "sentience" etc.

Mostly I want to go right back to the beginning and experience all these books over again, but this, like many other Watch books, was a fun and delightful romp. ( )

It is almost pointless to review this book. I mean, surely if I say it is a book by Terry Pratchett, set in Discworld and starring Samuel Vimes then that’ll be enough?

But just in case you need a little more, Vimes is taking a holiday in Sybil’s family home in the countryside. It wasn’t his idea, the countryside isn’t exactly his natural environment, but these things must be done. It is a family holiday so young Sam is along as well, and of course, they couldn’t leave Wilikins behind could they. A gentleman needs his gentleman’s gentleman, surely. But things are not as quiet as they may seem in the rural surroundings, and Vimes’ policeman senses are tingling. Something is not right, and it doesn’t matter where he is, the law is the law.

I’m sure if you are a Pratchett fan then nothing I say would persuade you not to pick this up and I wouldn’t want to. I’m not sure why it took me so long, its been sitting on my shelves for a year now. And if you aren’t a Pratchett fan, well then you could read this and enjoy it and love it, but you’d be much better off starting with Guards! Guards!, which is the first adventure of Vimes. If you don’t love him after that then I don’t want to talk about it!

Snuff has everything you want in a Pratchett book, humour, fantasy, philosophical wonderings and speculations, statements about the world and society, all hidden under comic fantasy. Honestly, just read the books already. ( )

I have a bit of a problem rating this book. Compared to most of the Discworld novels this is less fun and more serious. While all the books can make you laugh, this can also make you cry. It also has blood. And poo. The poo is funny. The blood is more serious.

All in all I still think it is really a good book but it would in no way be a good starter into the Discworld books. This is more like the black and white episode in the third season of a popular sitcom.

Commander Vimes is going on "vacation" with his family on the country side. He is afraid of being bored, but of course that will not happen. Instead he finds atrocities that are extraordinary not funny. And Vimes not being a funny guy bites on and follows it wherever it leads. ( )

Pratchett is a master storyteller. He is endlessly inventive, even when telling a routine kind of tale. He gives you more information and more story than you need, just because he can, and this is completely satisfying. He is a master of complex jokes, good bad jokes, good dreadful jokes and a kind of insidious wisdom about human nature (and other forms of alien nature). I think his mad footnotes are there because he can't stop his mind whirring, and our whirring minds go with him. I read his books at a gallop and then reread them every time I am ill or exhausted.

Vimes never understood where those explosive 'What's came from. After all, he thought, what's the point of just barking out 'What!' for absolutely no discernible reason? And as for "What, what!?" well, what was that all about? What? 'What?' seemed to be tent pegs hammered into the conversation, but what the hell for? What?
Lady Sybil took the view that her darling husband's word was law for the City Watch while, in her own case, it was a polite suggestion to be graciously considered.
[said by Willikins] This is a stiletto I'm holding to your throat and it ain't no ladies' shoe, this is the real thing, the cutting edge, as it were. You are a little twit, and I ain't the commander and I will slice you to the bone if you make a move. Got that? Now don't nod your head! Good, we are learning, aren't we? Now, my lad, the commander here is trusted by Diamond King of Trolls and the Low King of the Dwarfs, who would only have to utter a word for your measly carcass to come under the caress of a large number of versatile axes, and by Lady Margolotta of Uberwald, who trusts very few people, and by Lord Veterinari of Ankh-Morpork, who doesn't trust anybody. Got that? Don't nod! And you, my little man, have the damn nerve to doubt his word. I'm an easygoing sort of fellow, but that sort of thing leaves me right out of sorts, I don't mind telling you. You understand? I said, do you understand? Oh, all right, you can nod now. [...]
