Doro is an entity who changes bodies like clothes, killing his hosts by reflex--or design. He fears no one--until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu has also died many times. She can absorb bullets and make medicine with a kiss, give birth to tribes, nurture and heal, and savage anyone who threatens those she loves. She fears no one--until she meets Doro. Wild Seed de Octavia E. Butler

Clay's Ark de Octavia E. Butler (aaronius)
aaronius: If you liked Wild Seed but don't necessary want to jump into other novels in the series, this is a short but great alternative by the same author with equally interesting characters and themes.
  2. 00
The Silent City de Elisabeth Vonarburg (Sarasamsara)
Sarasamsara: Wild Seed takes place in the past while The Silent City explores a post-apocalyptic future. Thematically, however, they are eerily similar. Vonarburg and Butler share similar sensibilities.

Bones Become Flowers de Jess Mowry (thesmellofbooks)

I faltered somewhere around halfway through the book, mainly due to slight confusion of the narration and a few editing errors, but when it picked back up when Anyanwu founded her Louisiana settlement, I couldn't put it down. I was in tears by the end and so ultimately relieved and comforted by the conclusion. Once this book has fully set in, I intend to follow up with the next in the series. ( )

I wanted to love this book so much. So much.

I am afraid I am getting into a pattern, this is the second book in a row that disappointed me. Once again the premises seem to carry great potential. In this case, two supernatural beings that encounter one another during a horrific and chaotic time in human history: Africa during the height of kidnappings for slavery, and what follows as they move to the new colonies of North America.

I read a previous book by Octavia Butler, [b:Kindred|60931|Kindred|Octavia E. Butler|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1339423248s/60931.jpg|1049657], which I truly enjoyed, as she was able to weave into that fantastical story historical elements and serious questionings about slavery and race relations. I had expected the same from Wild Seed, but here the story never lets go of the 2 main characters and only superficially explores the historical settings of the time, there is too much "telling" for very little "showing". At times the story become long winded and repetitive. Worst yet, it become predictable, one of those "she loves him, there are misunderstandings, she hates him, he sees his ways, she loves him".

I do intent to read more from books by Octavia Butler, and I hope to be again in love with her story telling, but Wild Seed just did not quite do it for me. ( )

Pandemic Read. Least favorite of all the Octavia Butler books I've read. ( )

The most unique science fiction novel I've read. It's like nothing else in the genre.
Very enjoyable but also disturbingly unpleasant. ( )
