"Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lie low for a bit and let the mortals calm down. That's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch-black--and things really start getting ugly. Chicago's mayor insists it's nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She'll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who's behind this, and stop them before it's too late for vampires and humans alike"--… (més)

When I read book 4 I had a feeling this book would decide whether or not I stayed with the series. Not true. If any thing this book leaves me more conflicted.

In the last book Merit learned that the mayor wasn't such a nice guy and in the process Ethan, Master of Cadogan, and once lover of Merit was killed. Needless to say Chicagoland Vamp friends were up in arms. I admit I never fall in love with vampires. All my book crushes are magic users, werewolves or fairies, so when I fell in love with Ethan I was a little surprised and very pleased. Finally a vampire who grew into something I liked.

Now in Drink Deep we find a grieving Merit, trying to pull herself together after losing Ethan. Merit's idolizing a dead Ethan, maybe in part because she's finally realizing how much she depended on him. Luckily Merit isn't the type to mope and get nothing done. Instead we're treated to Jonah, Grey House vampire and member of the RG. He's playing the part of Merit's partner now and of course has a crush on Merit. I'm going to quit whining about how all men go weak in the knees around Merit now. I promise.

So, the latest issue is that Chicago seems to be falling apart, with the lake going black and worse. It doesn't help that Merit is having nightmares about Ethan. Oh and the GP has dumped a friend to spy and tattle on Cadogan House who starts enforcing ridiculous rules and rationing blood. We get a tour of Chicago and an introduction to some new sups as Merit tries to put things right despite the GP's continued interference. It's entertaining, but it admittedly feels a little empty. Jonah is fun and it's enjoyable to watch Merit learning about the world around her, but the constant road blocking of the GP made me want to scream "revolt!" all book long!

The end is what got to me. It was shocking and unpleasant and I did not enjoy it or feel like all the characters acted within what I would expect from people I've known for 4-5 books now.

So, SPOILERS: (You've been warned).
Mallory?! Seriously?! That was blindsiding and I'm expecting an explanation next book! That was so far out of character... And I'm glad Ethan's back, but man, poor Jonah! No wonder men are bitter towards Merit once they break up, she throws them away fast. Careful Ethan! And if Cadogan House and the rest of Chicago (except Morgan, forget him) don't revolt against the crown the way they should have back in the Revolution by the next book I'll be joining the protesters outside the gates. OMG! my faith in Chloe Neill has been restored, granted it took Mere losing Mallory but Ethan is back yayyyyy, for a while I was worried, and then I became really worried that Ethan was going to be ripped away again. I feel horrible for catcher though, poor guy. But extremely totally excited for the next book. ( )

Merit deals with the lost of Ethan and her house being in receivership. Magic is going wonky in the city and if she can't figure it out Chicago will be wiped out. Some obvious story bits, but very engaging anyways, learn more about different sups..

I have to provide thanks to my best friend who hoisted this series upon me knowing fully well that I had other items on my to read agenda! LK I love you for that as I am grossly enamored with Chicagoland Vampires! While this book was an emotional roller coaster for me, I cannot wait for the next book to be released. I was distraught at the thought that Ethan, my dream vampire, was gone for good and I believe I grieved as much as Merit did. I reeled at the thought that I would never be able to picture him in my mind as I read about him when the last book ended. Chloe Neill made it up to me and returned my knight to heal my heart! Merit is loyalty personified and it makes me proud of the vampire she's become. She is continually willing to write her own rules when it comes to the safety of Cadogan House or its vampires. And while her heart was shattering over the death of Ethan she marched on. Even while she was betrayed by her best friend she marches on. She showed that even without Ethan by her side she could stand up to the bigotry and do the right thing. Her courage, her strength, her loyalty, her unparalleled goodness is a prime example of why she is titled, Sentinel of Cadogan House. ( )

I liked it-it wasn't great, but good. I understand there will be four more books in the series. I hope that Merit and Ethan stay together for at least this next book, due out in August. I am getting tired of the get together, split apart scenario. Ethan turns to someone else, Merit takes it and comes back without much trouble. For a kick-ass vampire sentinel, her wimpiness in this relationship worries me. Next time Ethan does it, please Merit, KICK HIM TO THE CURB! Jump someone else's bones for once! For instance, Jonah! I think Ms. Neill will have a hard time keeping this series fresh, but we'll see. ( )
