Set in the corrupt days after apartheid in South Africa, this is a story vividly spiced with native culture, modern thinking and the space between the two. The abject forced poverty and the utter disregard for human life made this story a tough one to read. The writing was flawless and kept the story moving well. The characters and their customs especially the Zulu, were well developed and three dimensional whether you liked them or not. I highly recommend this thriller. ( )

This is definitely a compelling, action-oriented read; a fair number of explosions, lots of shooting, and some racial melodrama to go with it all. In the end, the nihilistic ending was also probably the only solution; no real redemption is possible. That said, some of the characters felt more like caricatures, even recognizing the seemingly legitimate takedown of South African president Jacob Zuma for what it is. ( )

DUST DEVILS is one of those hard to put down books once you get started. It gives one an over view of what life is like in South Africa with one portion of the country stepping into the 21st century and part of the country still living by the rules and standards set in the times of tribal rule throughout Africa. I found this clash of belief systems to be interesting and fascinating. It shows that the hatreds created by the British rule continue to simmer just beneath the surface and at times break through in times of crisis.

The conflict is seen through the eyes of a young teen girl, a man who has lost his family and who has been charged with their murder, his father who, as a mercenary fought against the Zulus, a police officer who goes back home to face up to what he left behind when he moved to the big city, and a Zulu headman who, through his actions have drawn all of the characters together. Mr. Smith does an excellent job of bringing all of the stories together to give us a view of the troubles that are present in South Africa.

It is not a murder mystery, but a murder investigation that draws all of these various people together. In bringing them together Smith gives us a view of other problems in modern day South Africa. AIDS pops up in the story, along with the poverty that many of the people live in sub-Saharan Africa. Hopefully as one reads the book they will not overlook these details that are in the background of the story. I believe that is where the true story lies. I look forward to finding other books by Mr. Smith and to put him on my must read list. An excellent job and a fantastic story. ( )
