Allingham provides several nicely done action scenes. There is a rooftop house-breaking rescue full of all the excitement readers could want. There is a nighttime escape and evasion late in the book which results in several reveals, but also things like gunfire and quicksand! There are comical moments as well: being introduced to the rear entrance to Campion’s apartment is priceless.

Overall, this is a serviceable enjoyable read. Readers ought not take it too seriously and have fun with the little romp. There is a dog who provides little levity and amusement, as well. I will very likely read the next in the series, which I already own. However, this is not a series I can gobble down – it definitely does better with breaks in between stories. ( )

Originally published in 1930, it took a bit of time to get into the style of writing, and I did find the phonetic dialect too much at times, and Campion's frivolity.
After many attempts on his life American Judge Crowdy Lobbett comes to England. Attempts, because he believes he has a clue to the identity of a criminal mastermind, enter Albert Campion with a plan to protect him and hopefully unmask the criminal.
A NetGalley Book. ( )

You should think of this as more in the line of Indiana Jones than a serious detective story. This is not intended to be taken as a serious mystery, and the reviewers who didn't like it appear to have been looking for something more serious.

Albert Campion is here at his quirky best, manipulating things behind the scenes in hilarious ways to make it all come together--mostly. He, the master of manipulating people, somehow failed to get what he really wanted out of it, though he did successfully solve the crime.

No, this is not terribly realistic, just as Indiana Jones isn't terribly realistic. But it is fun. After struggling through some of Allingham's more serious mysteries, I mostly decided I just don't like them. But when she writes light-hearted stuff like this, it's fantastic. I wish she'd done more of it.

This is maybe my second favorite of the Campion novels. My favorite, The Fear Sign, is very much like this: a crazy, light-hearted adventure with lots of interesting characters, and Campion doing all sorts of shenanigans to make it all work. ( )

As good as Agatha Christie. J K Rowling said she enjoyed the author so I thought I'd better try her. Yes, she is a good mystery writer. ( )

This was the first time I've read a Campion mystery, but I had seen the BBC series, and I was very surprised to find the character so different between the two genres.

In the books he's basically a goof-ball, which lends an air of mystery & confusion about him & his skills.

Campion is aboard a trans-Atlantic liner being bored by the litany of an obnoxious man of gossip, when he saves a man from electrocution during a magic show.

The man Campion saves turns out to be a judge, who has sent many members of a notorious crime ring to jail and has just acquired the clue that will uncover the name of the leader.... In order to keep the judge quiet, many members of his staff have been murdered in the judge's stead.

Campion is hired to protect the judge and agrees to help uncover the crime lord by isolating the judge at Mystery Mile, an Estate belonging to friends far out in the countryside.

The disappearance of the judge from the Estate's maze, the suicide of the local pastor, & kidnapping of one of the Estate's owners made for an interesting story.

I found Campion's actions, sleuthing, & entourage intriguing, although I did figure out who the bad-guy was.

I'll be reading another! ( )
